Teaching my kiddos to be more balanced has been a challenge. When our youngest began struggling at school not wanting to eat anything but the special last snack, I knew I had to do something. I remembered seeing bins for lunch making. In a perfect world those bins may contain more nutrient dense, less processed items. Balance in life however is also necessary, so we do what we can sustainably! Progress over perfection is a motto here!
Our bins are separated into:
1) cheese & yogurt
2) a few kinds of fruit
3) protein snack variety - pepperoni, ham, hardboiled eggs
4) a variety of cut up veggies & dip
5) last snacks
(we made the mini blueberry muffins, banana substituting 80% of the sugar called for.)
As for the “sandwich”- that we make daily together. My kids love changing this part up for a bagel or meat & crackers, a wrap..
Before bed we pull out the bins and make lunches together. The jist here is that they begin to become self aware and empowered by making choices by themselves, that support their growing minds & bodies! generally to start, the encouragement would be to take one from each, but it’s ok if your child wants a yogurt & a cheese, or two kinds of veggies, to create a balanced lunch! Your child’s appetite/needs may vary as well so adjust accordingly.
Understand that perfection isn’t a requirement. Having healthy, curiosity driven conversation helps pave a path to a healthy relationship with food & their bodies!
I think it’s important that foods are not labelled “good” & “bad”, but that our bodies require more of the nutrient dense things over the less nutrient dense & for good reason! Also though, food IS more than fuel. So often food is a part of celebration, vacation, culture and more. That shouldn’t be restricted because of food.
This method can often open space for questions. “Can I have 2 last snacks [least nutrient dense part of lunch]?” Might be a question, which then opens up talk about our bodies needs and how/where we get them without you having to initiate that convo ☺️
lets help pave the way in empowering our kiddos through education & practice ❤️
