I had a chance to reflect on the Saskatchewan Provincial Budget on CBC’s Blue Sky radio last week. Here’s a few thoughts:
“Well, my first thought is a 2% increase is not enough. It’s not meaningful in real life because Saskatchewan people with disabilities who rely on SAID are already living in legislated poverty or deep poverty. A 2% increase may sound like a lot, it may sound like a good amount, but 2% for me, it’s about $27.50 per month. This won’t meaningfully change disabled peoples’ day to day reality.”
Increases to the residential care benefit also keep people with disabilities below the poverty line.
“Well, people with disabilities are still being left below the poverty line with this increase coming to families who care for their loved ones at home. I think that it’s still considerably quite low - and one day I want to move out… I’m concerned that this may be more challenging for me than I’m anticipating”.
