Foam Rolling Essentials Lesson #3!

Sometimes a foam roller is not what you're looking for!

Depending on the area of the body you hope to self massage, a foam roller may not be the best option.

In my personal selfcare kit I have:

A golfball: For hands, feet, and even forearms.

A foam roller: For large muscle groups like legs and back.

A lacrosse ball: For specific and deep wrk on hard to reach areas like behind shoulder blades and deep in the hips.

A theracane: For targeted work on small areas, one of my favourite tools for work on my own neck.

A roller ball: Mainly for lighter warm up selfcare or use on arms. Also a great tool to use on a workout partner.

A carpenter can't use only a hammer and you should also use the right tool for any job when it comes to selfcare! I have plenty of tips and tricjs with each tool. Ask away!

Foam Rolling Basics Lesson 2!

A foam rolling session is not like coming in for a massage. your goal isn't to treat the entire area. Typically we foam roll and self massage problem areas in a fairly isolated fashion.

I personally suggest a quick warm up to any area before any form of self massage. This can be as simple as a 5 minute walk or applying heat to the area for a few minutes to prepare it.

Once warm, start light and start broad! Diving right into a tight area can cause more damage than good. For example, if your low back is the target, roll all the way from your shoulders to lower glutes in large light pressure movements.

Only after a warm up AND broad light treatment should you start applying heavier pressure through your roller to the targeted area. usually 5-10 minutes will do the trick.

Remember to finish your foam rolling session as you started it, go back to broad light pressure before packing it away.

More to follow! and please, never hesitate to ask questions, I am a happy teacher and I can always show you safe and effective methods of selfcare.

I've had a few patients in asking about foam rollers so I thought I'd address some basics here over the next week!

Lesson 1

A foam roller can be a great tool to extend time between appointments but just like any tool, you need the right one!

In general, look for one that is hollow in the centre with reenforced inner walls and foam on the outside.

With reenforced inner walls, the surrounding foam can be a little on the softer side while still being able to perform as you hope.

Textures and patterns are not a necessity. you will achieve similar results from any pattern or lack there of. My own favourite foam roller has some nubs built in, not all do and it's not necessary for proper usage.

More foam roller facts to follow!

Feel free to reach out any time and ask before you try rolling yourself out :)
