Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Myths! 🦄

Great post by .physio !There seems to be more of a taboo/barrier to seeing a pelvic health physio vs a sports physio. On average people have symptoms for 7 years before seeking help. There are a multitude of reasons for this, but I want to debunk common myths which might put you off visiting your local service.

1. If having an internal exam is a stopper for you - then don't let it be. There are other ways your physio can assess you. Whilst a pelvic floor assessment internally is super useful, you can decline one and still be treated.

2. Pelvic health physios do treat incontinence, but we also treat loads of other stuff - pelvic pain, painful s*x, tight pelvic floors, scar treatment after c-section, prolapse, bowel conditions, constipation... to name a few!

3. You may think the odd leak whilst you exercise isn't a big deal and you don't want to bother your GP with it. But honestly, pelvic health symptoms are so much more straight forward to treat when they are mild. So don't delay, make an appointment with a pelvic health physiotherapist today!

Things that influence prolapse 👀

Awesome post by !

Prolapse, just like so many other pelvic health issues, is influenced by a wide range of things - some of which we can control or work on!

The list above is by no means exhaustive.

So while some things that influence prolapse are out of our control (ie. pregnancy & delivery history or our hormone changes as examples) there are other things that we can work on that may influence our prolapse symptoms.

This includes:

⚡️Bladder and bowel habits - body positions when on the toilet, avoiding straining, keeping in mind how our nutrition and hydration affect this.

⚡️Trying different breathing strategies and bracing techniques when we are exercising to changing the downward pressure our pelvic floor has to cope with.

⚡️Pelvic floor tone and strength - making sure we are doing the right exercise for what we individually need - either relaxing that floor or strengthening it… or somewhere in between.

⚡️Physical fitness and strength - having good strength and fitness in the areas surrounding the pelvic floor so that the body on a whole is working together

It’s also important to note that a certain grade of prolapse doesn’t necessary correlate with how symptomatic someone feels.

So if you are stuck feeling like you and your prolapse aren’t making any progress, take a look to see if there is something different you can try.

Still feeling stuck or not sure what to do differently? Send me a DM to set up a discovery call to get you started on a return to sport plan!

Patients will often come to see me from one week to the next to the next and they say “I’m pretty much the same as last week”.

But when we look back from where they began, the progress is amazing!

It can be hard to see the gradual incremental change when you live with yourself.

You need to zoom out to truly reflect on how far you’ve come.
