Happy OT month 🎉 Couldn’t be happier to be an OT! A little biased but I think it is an amazing profession. Who doesn’t love a job where you get to bring out the best in everyone, encourage and enable independence, spark curiosity and creativity, and did I mention PLAYING!!! OT, we put the FUN into Function!

Love this post. A great visual to understand your own sensory style. Show this to your friends, partners, even kids and see if your sensory needs are the same or different -it is a great conversation starter and possibly the first step to get to know yourself and your favourite people.

I’m a big Todd Parr fan and absolutely love this checklist! It’s an exciting time for many, back to school, not sure about you, I’m pretty excited about it!😏 However….I do know that with all the changes and rules it can produce a lot of anxiety in all the age groups. So while this is a checklist that some may see just for kids, I challenge that and say it is for all of us! Of course my favourite is the last one- “Be who you are”! I hope it’s a wonderful start to the school year for all, the kids, their parents, the teachers and admin staff! ✨🍎📓✏️✨

New is scary. As a result, we tend to revert to our known ways-even if it is not healthy. When we start new journeys while we are in charge and making new choices, it can feel like a set back and can in fact be triggering. When we grow, we need to be curious about the new experiences and what we notice about them. When we can be curious, stop and notice, it keeps us present and in our bodies. While being in our body and present, we are less likely to be triggered. New, while scary, is always worth your time and efforts.

I think that these are great daily reminders. My most favourite sound in the whole world is my kids full belly laughter. As they are getting older, I am loving watch them turn into their own people with their own unique ways of looking at the world, and seeing how they still delight in the small wonders. And even though they are almost the same size as me (and bigger) nothing soothes my heart more than their hugs and hands in mine. Take the time to pause and notice, these are precious moments that you can’t take for granted!

Wow, do I ever love this post!!!! We are constantly teaching our kids (and those around us) so many different skills without even always realizing it. It’s a great thing to remember that our mistakes, our chances to problem solve, how we ask for help, what we care about and how we take care of ourselves are always being watched and if we are lucky, modelled. Acknowledging this and sharing your “failures and success” sets our kids up to giving these things a try as well. Modelling is one of the most effective and important teaching/parenting skills we have, don’t forget to use it!!!

EVERY child matters, NOW and ALWAYS!!
The idea that some don’t or didn’t is horrific. Do your part, become educated, stand up for what’s right, protect the vulnerable. Come on Canada. Show up!!!! Always in our hearts.♥️ 💜

This is for all the parents home right now with online learners. You may not have noticed their need for movement while in a learning environment until now. Encourage the movement as this is how they are regulating themselves to stay focused while learning/listening/doing.
Listening to our bodies is a skill that we all need, so let’s encourage your kids to learn this at an early age. Trust in what their body is telling them, this will lead to self-regulation!!

One of my favourite adults growing up first introduced me to the saying “when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me”. Never forgot that one! It is amazing how quickly we do jump to assumptions and how then that rationale leads us to make “interesting” choices. I’m challenging you to stop and check in before you assume and question why you are making the assumption.....what would it be like to just ask a question instead????

So true!!!!!! So important during these VERY trying times to make sure you do the things that re-charge you, not just the things that drain you. When you are feeling tired, check in and see what has filled your day and which parts (if any) provided a spark of joy. Try make a point to carve a little time in the sun just for you.

A conversation I have frequently with my clients. So many of us have a hard time when our self care starts to feel “selfish” or when we need to set firmer boundaries with some. When we take care of ourselves and really listen to what we need, we realize that some of those who are in our inner circle are not good for us. What would it be like to let them go? Self care is SO important always but especially right now, living in a pandemic. We have less capacity, less in our cup to give to others and are easily overwhelmed. It’s ok. Just know your limits, set your boundaries, take care of you! Self care is more than bubble baths!!
