December 3 is the International Day for People with Disabilities.

A day where we proudly mark how far we've come towards true inclusion...and somberly mark how much more road there is to go.

At CoHabit, we believe that everyone, regardless of ability, deserves safe, affordable homes where they feel a true sense of belonging. Housing is a human right, and we're making sure everyone has the access they need.

On this important day, we ask you to reflect on how can you help make the world a better place for everyone. Great news, we have a few ideas!

Follow accounts like CoHabit, The Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities (.mb) and Manitoba Possible (. possible), and help spread the word about inclusion and the human rights of people with disabilities.

Make a donation if you can. Non-profits are all working hard to remove barriers and improve the lives of those living with a disability. Every little bit counts!

Show up! We host events, gatherings and fundraisers that are full of fun, laughter and community. They're always open to the public and we'd love to see you there.

Let's make a better world for everyone, together.

Introducing Emily!

You might have met Emily (they/them) at a CoHabit gathering - and now we're thrilled to welcome them to the team as a student intern 😍

As part of their university studies in a class on Indigenous Culture, Emily wanted to create some social media content that explores the intersection of disability and other equity-seeking groups, including Indigenous people.

We're so happy that Emily thought to reach out and share their perspectives, learnings and experiences with all of our followers.

A big warm welcome to our very first social media intern, and keep an eye out for their content!

There's a better way forward.

CoHabit’s vision is to offer integrated housing within fully accessible apartment buildings. People who need supports should have choice in where they live and the opportunity to fully participate in community.

In addition to offering disability support services to a percentage of people who live within the apartment block, CoHabit will also work with all residents to build a community of safety and belonging.

The most recent Canadian Census shows clearly that Canadians are lonely. This is not unique to people with disabilities or even older adults. In fact, young adults are some of the loneliest in our country. CoHabit believes that focusing on building community will increase the health and wellbeing of everyone.

Segregation doesn't serve anyone.

Most disability services in Manitoba are segregated. People with disabilities live in family homes, group homes and personal care homes. Segregation stigmatizes and devalues people while also minimizing opportunity for connection and inclusion.

CoHabit’s vision is to offer integrated housing within fully accessible apartment buildings. People who need supports should have choice in where they live and the opportunity to fully participate in community.

Did you know?

Qualifying for disability supports in Manitoba isn’t a given.

To qualify for adult disability services in Manitoba, you need to have acquired your disability in childhood AND meet an intellectual disability threshold. This means that many adults with disabilities don’t qualify and are left with service options that don’t always meet their needs.

Because of the eligibility criteria, many Manitobans with disabilities live for decades in personal care homes. This is usually a last resort due to inadequate services available elsewhere.

We're grateful for all year round!

We've just received our independent charity status, but we'll always remember and value where our journey began ❤️

David Kron, pictured above with Jennifer Rodrigue, and his team always believed in this vision and while we're a little further apart now, we know this partnership was built to last.

Thank you, Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba, for all you've done for us, and folks all across the province!

📣 Big news for CoHabit! 📣

Because of the unwavering support and leadership from the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba(CPMB), and in partnership with CPMB, we are so proud to announce today that are now an independent charitable organization, operating under the name CoHabit Inc.

CoHabit would not exist without the generosity, expertise, and support of the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba (CPMB) who was the first and remains its staunchest champion of the CoHabit vision. David, the CPMB Board of Directors, and the whole membership, have been incredible. They welcomed this big idea and supported the project in every way for the past six years. We cannot thank them enough for their generosity, their vision and their advocacy.

We have also had incredible support from donors and business advisors who believe in this project, and who have been incredibly generous with their time and money.

We cannot thank CPMB and this entire community of support enough for your unwavering commitment to this project and to the dignity and rights of people with disabilities.

We're updating our website, our social media feeds and more - and off we go, towards a more inclusive future!
