I failed my comprehensive exam.

The comprehensive exam is meant to test your knowledge from the entire first year, and not passing this exam means you cannot proceed to clerkship. So, hearing this news after passing the rest of my exams was so disappointing and honestly scary.

I felt like a failure like I did not belong in this space, and I cried so much (more like sobbing 😭). However, my program was very supportive and reminded me that not only was this examination not a true testament to my knowledge and worth, but I could also remediate this test.

I was also so sad that most of my vacation would be spent worrying about my remediation. But my program, amazing friends, family, and partner reminded me that I could still enjoy my time off and that they were confident in my abilities to pass this time around!

With their support, mentorship, and some work, I'm happy to say I have now OFFICIALLY completed my first year of PA school 🎉!

Please let this be a reminder that there can be missteps in this journey, but perseverance and resilience will help you continue 👣!

Planning and organization!

When I reapplied, I started first by making a plan. I outlined all the deadlines for all three schools, all requirements, and necessary testing.

Once I had all the information laid out, then I started working through it!

Planning ahead also minimizes the chance of being surprised or caught off guard by additional requirements, for instance, completing the Casper exam before U of Ms deadline!

There is still time to make a thorough game plan. This will help you keep you on track and well informed during the application process!

I had the fantastic opportunity to attend a PA info session in September at the University of Manitoba! It was great to hear feedback, advice, tips, and encouragement from first and second-year PA students from the U of M program.

If you missed out, no worries. These slides touch on topics from funding and salaries for PA in Manitoba to even resources for MMIs.

As a reminder, the MPAS program application is due January 15th, 2023!

Please note that this info session was not affiliated with the University of Manitoba PA program. All opinions are from those of the PA students, and all advice presented does not represent that of the U of M PA program, nor does it guarantee admission into the program.

Special thanks to the info session mediator Miyo () and all the other PA student speakers, Casey, Shavira (), Chelsea, and Arianna.

Also, thanks to the Pre-PA society at U of M for organizing the event! For more news, information, and resources surrounding PA applications, pathways, and more, follow them .um
