Save Sankuru Children Dr. Paul Law is a pediatrician working to save the lives of the children in the DR Congo

Dr. Paul Law is a pediatrician working to save the lives of the children in the DR Congo’s Sankuru Province, one of the poorest places on earth. There, children face a mortality rate of 15% before the age of five, more than 20 times the rate in the US. Currently, he works at the provincial headquarters as head of medical research. He has a MD, a Masters In Public Health, a Masters in Health Inform

atics, and a pediatric residency -- all from Johns Hopkins. He is the only pediatrician in the province, which is about the size of Ohio and has 3 million residents – half of whom are under 18.

What an awesome day! Such a treat for me to be out of the Provincial Health Headquarters and be on the ground. I spent three hours with a Community Health Worker last night letting families know about Today's vaccine day. 42 children came. I gave cookies to the older ones after their vaccines. But, we did more than vaccines. We saw several moms for prenatal care. We educated about child spacing techniques and got a few takers (less kids for me, but that's ok). And 8 kids were sick, turned out to have Malaria (see the test kit results) and we treated them for free. All 4 newborn babies in the ESTHER project showed for their vaccines. A few kids had malnutrition and we did some education there. It was truly an awesome day. Only 5.9% of children in Sankuru are fully immunized. Vaccine-preventable disease like measles are deadly in a place with limited health care and high rates of malnutrition. -- Dr. Paul Law

Esther is doing great. She is up-to-date on all her immunizations. She was sick once for a couple days while I was gone. She is among the 8% of kids in the Sankuru who are fully vaccinated.

Esta (Esther) makes it through the dangerous neonatal period (first 28 days). We pause at church and give thanks.

“Angels of Medicine” Profiles Dr. Law!

The website “Angels of Medicine,” which highlights the work of medical humanitarians around the world, has just done an excellent profile of Dr. Law and his work with the children of Sankuru. Check it out at:

Dr. Paul Law, the only pediatrician for 1.5 million children in the DRC's Sankuru Province, is working to improve healthcare access and data collection in one of the poorest regions on Earth, driven by a deep family connection to the area.
