Insulin shortages continue to affect countries worldwide across income levels and health systems.

A report published in December documented insulin shortages and stockouts between 2023 and 2025, showing that this is not an isolated problem, but a global and systemic one.

The factsheet on Sources of insulin, oral medicines, and medical devices for diabetes for low- and middle-income countries has been updated with the latest information!
It informs key actors (from national programs and procurement agencies/departments) on existing mechanisms that can be used to facilitate access to essential diabetes medicines and medical devices for regular procurement, especially during procurement system disruptions or stock shortages.

🎄✨As #2025 draws to a close, the NCD Policy Lab reflects on a year marked by collaboration, evidence generation, and continued engagement to advance access to essential medicines for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

Throughout the year, and despite ongoing global challenges, the NCD Policy Lab and its partners strengthened efforts to generate policy-relevant evidence, translate research into actionable outputs, facilitate dialogue between researchers and policymakers, and support collective action to address persistent barriers to access to medicines, diagnostics, and medical devices.
On behalf of all the partners involved in the NCD Policy Lab, warmest wishes are extended to the NCD Policy Lab’s audience & to everyone who has contributed to advancing its mission. The NCD Policy Lab looks forward continuing this important work in the coming year to drive the NCD forward.

On 23 September 2025, alongside the UN General Assembly ( ) in New York, the NCD Policy Lab co-organised with NCD Alliance, Access to Medicine Foundation, and Medicines Patent Pool the event “Bridging the Gap: Scaling Innovative Approaches to NCD Medicine Access in LMICs.”
The discussion explored strategies to improve access to treatments for noncommunicable diseases ( ) and mental health conditions in low- and middle-income countries.

By bringing together leaders from global health agencies, pharmaceutical companies, governments, regional health bodies, and civil society, the event highlighted a shared commitment to closing treatment gaps and strengthening country responses to the growing burden of NCDs.

đź”” Insulin shortages and stockouts are a global problem across geographies and income groups.

In many settings, these disruptions are not occasional but chronic, undermining continuity of care, placing unnecessary pressure on people with diabetes and providers, and widening existing health inequities. Despite being discovered more than a century ago, insulin access remains uneven and, in far too many contexts, uncertain.

"Documenting global Insulin Shortages and Stockouts 2023–2025: Comprehensive overview using various data sources" provides a comprehensive overview of the issue of insulin and , collecting information for the lay press, a review of WHO and government databases as well as questions to the three major insulin manufacturers.

Last week, the NCD Policy Lab joined forces with the NCD Alliance to host a focused workshop on advancing access to essential medicines, diagnostics and medical devices ✨

The session brought together voices from World Health Organization (WHO), global access initiatives, organisations and private-sector partners, creating a unique space to align priorities. This workshop was a true success, showcasing the progress and development of solutions first envisioned during last June’s 🚀

A huge thank-you to all participants for their energy, expertise and forward-thinking contributions, which will help shape the next phase of global NCD advocacy.
