Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an apicomplexan.[3] Infections with toxoplasmosis are associated with a variety of neuropsychiatric and behavioral conditions.[8] Occasionally, people may have a few weeks or months of mild, flu-like illness such as muscle aches and tender lymph nodes.[1] In a small number of people, eye problems may develop.[1] In those with a weakened immune system, severe symptoms such as seizures and poor coordination may occur.[1] If a woman becomes infected during pregnancy, a condition known as congenital toxoplasmosis may affect the child.[1]

Kenya has made a groundbreaking achievement in public health, becoming the tenth country to eliminate human African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, as a public health problem. The World Health Organization (WHO) has validated this milestone, marking a significant step towards making Africa free of neglected tropical diseases. Sleeping sickness is a vector-borne disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma brucei, transmitted through the bites of infected tsetse flies, and can be fatal if left untreated ¹.

*Key Highlights of Kenya's Achievement:*

- *Second NTD Elimination*: This is Kenya's second neglected tropical disease elimination, following Guinea worm disease in 2018.
- *No Indigenous Cases*: Kenya has reported no indigenous new cases for over 10 years, with the last autochthonous case detected in 2009 and the last two exported cases detected in 2012.
- *Strengthened Surveillance*: The country has strengthened HAT surveillance in 12 health facilities in six historically endemic counties, equipped with diagnostic tools and trained personnel.

The WHO congratulates Kenya on this achievement, emphasizing the country's commitment to public health and disease control. Kenya's elimination of sleeping sickness as a public health problem paves the way for renewed economic growth and prosperity. Other countries that have achieved this milestone include Benin, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Guinea, Rwanda, Togo, and Uganda ¹.

Plant-parasitic nematodes and other parasites cause substantial damage to crops, resulting in estimated annual losses of $80-118 billion globally. This damage not only affects crop yields but also contributes to food insecurity, particularly in regions heavily reliant on specific crops.

🌎 Hunger remains a pressing issue, with 673 million people worldwide facing hunger in 2024. Progress varies by region, with Latin America and Asia seeing improvements, while Africa and Western Asia continue to struggle with high hunger rates. 📈

🤝 To address this, governments, communities, and individuals can work together by supporting fair food systems, promoting social protection, raising awareness about healthy eating, investing in rural areas, and fighting food inflation. Let's collaborate to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food and no one is left behind! 💙
