β€œWay Home” starring Ngwa Bernard, Mbeng Lilian, T Jay, Lysongo Robinson, Yimbu Emmanuel, and Glory Chando

In the quest to learn more about his father, whom he only knows as Ta Egong, disgraced doctor Nken Okoso, son of Winnie Okoso, travels back to his native village on the Island of Enokun in search for answers.

As he crosses the river, he sees visions of spirit-like figures, just standing and staring, but he can’t tell if they are real or if he’s hallucinating.

Upon disembarking from the canoe, he spots a woman being harassed by two men and immediately, he swings into action. However, he’s easily overpowered and the same woman eventually has to fight off the assailants.

The woman then berates him for wanting to play the hero and advises him to choose his battles wisely.

Later in the day, when Nken arrives at the High Chief’s palace, he learns that there is a disease that has been plaguing part of the community and that a group of outsiders who have promised them a cure have taken over most of their lands and palm trees in exchange for the vaccine.

He also learns that his father, who was a judge in Enokun, passed away two years ago.

Unable to return home that same day, Nken is forced to spend the night in the village. While he sleeps, he dreams of those same spirit-like figures standing outside his hut but when he wakes up to check, he finds nothing.

Instead, as he ventures farther, he finds a very sick girl surrounded by other villagers holding lamps. When he tries to intervene, the woman from the river comes out of nowhere, drags him off the girl, and subsequently overpowers him.

Later on, she then explains that the girl has become too sick and declared an okosi, and therefore, cannot be touched by anybody. Only the members of Balam are allowed to come close to carry the patient to Oshe Bakosi, the land of the dead. If anybody is seen touching the sick person, the person too will be carried to Oshe Bakosi.

Finally the woman introduces herself as Oti and explains what’s been happening in the village.

The next day, when Nken meets with Oti to travel to the riverbank, he requests for water, so Oti leads him to the stream.

Sensing that there could be something more than just a plague given that the stream is the village’s only source of drinking water, Nkem collects some samples to take back to city and analyse.

And upon seeing the result, Nken uncovers a disturbing truth.

I’ve always been a fan of epic movies and I long for the days Nollywood will start creating stories that mix mythology, spirituality, and traditions like they did in the past.

So when I watched β€œWay Home”, I felt this nostalgia, like I was watching Igodo or Sango but told from the point of view of a modern man.

The story is rich, the characters are complex, and the villain is insidious, so I don’t mind that the movie has two parts.

Both parts are currently available to watch on YouTube on ML Production 237.
