✨The third trimester is a wild ride! From breathing like you're running a marathon to sleep patterns like a newborn, here's what to expect in these final weeks 👇
✅(Shortness of Breath) Diaphragmatic Compression
As the uterus grows toward your ribcage, it displaces your diaphragm and compresses your lungs. You may feel out of breath even while resting. This is normal, as your lung capacity is physically restricted by the baby’s position.
✅Disrupted Sleep Architecture
Progesterone levels and physical discomfort make deep REM sleep difficult to maintain. Your body is also undergoing "proactive conditioning" waking up frequently to prepare you for the erratic sleep cycles of newborn care.
✅Increased Fetal Activity and Patterns
By the third trimester, the baby has developed a distinct wake-sleep cycle. Because they have less room to move, you will feel every roll and stretch more intensely. It is important to monitor these "kick counts" daily to ensure fetal well-being.
✅ Pelvic Girdle Pain and "The Waddling Gait"
Your body is releasing a hormone called relaxin, which softens your ligaments and opens the pelvic joints to prepare for birth. This shift in your center of gravity and joint laxity is what causes the characteristic change in how you walk.
✅ Frequent intonation
It occurs primarily due to mechanical compression of the bladder:The baby’s head often "engages" or drops lower into the pelvis during these final weeks. This puts direct pressure on the bladder, significantly reducing its capacity and causing the frequent urge to urinate. Additionally, your kidneys are filtering up to 50% more blood volume than pre-pregnancy, resulting in higher urine production.
✅Edema (Fluid Retention)
Your blood volume has increased by nearly 50% during pregnancy. Gravity causes excess fluid to pool in your feet and ankles, especially at the end of the day. While common, sudden swelling in the face or hands should always be reported to your provider.
✅Emotional Lability
The surge in estrogen and progesterone, combined with the physical stress of the final weeks, affects your neurotransmitters. It is medically expected to experience "mood swings" or heightened anxiety as your brain prepares for the massive hormonal shift of labor.
✅Digestive Slowdown and Reflux
To ensure the baby absorbs maximum nutrients, your digestive system slows down. This, combined with the upward pressure on your stomach, often leads to acid reflux (heartburn) and constipation.
✅Braxton Hicks Contractions
Your uterus is a muscle that needs to "practice." You will feel tightening or hardening of the abdomen. These are not true labor pains but are your body’s way of toning the uterine muscle in preparation for the real work ahead.
✅Physical and Mental Fatigue
Your metabolic rate is at its peak right now. Your heart is pumping harder, and your kidneys are filtering more waste than ever before. If you feel exhausted, it’s because your body is performing a high-level physiological feat 24 hours a day.
