Trying to maintain a healthy diet when on holiday is never easy, especially when confronted with all you can eat buffet food. In my latest column for the Cyprus Mail newspaper, I make some suggestions that could keep the weight off during this slightly unusual holiday period.

The UK Government today announced the FULL raft of measures to tackle obesity. Banning 1+1 offers on junk food, no more prominent displays of sugary foods and drinks and doctors will offer health coaching - the same ones that will also offer bariatric surgery presumably.

A WEIGHT WATCHERS diet will also be encouraged and this one almost made me fall of my seat. I appreciate that some use and have experienced success on WW (the new name) but I know very few people who have achieved lasting change.

The key to fighting this crisis is tackling nutrition guidelines that encourage cereals, copious amounts of wheat and processed vegetable oils.

Since the guidelines were introduced in the 1970s, obesity has skyrocketed. The evidence is available to all governments but to admit they got it wrong, would be to admit to playing a major role in the crisis and that is not going to happen.

These measures do not go far enough but at least it is a start. I just hope the major processed food companies don't impose too much influence and shut it down as they have in the past. I remain sceptical.

I am simply astonished that the UK Government is offering incentives to doctors to perform weight loss surgery. Here are my thoughts on the subject.

Offering financial incentives to doctors to perform bariatric surgery to tackle obesity, is madness. Where is the incentive to educate and get nutrition under control?

Yes, surgery works, but it is only necessary in such a small amount of cases. With a good, well researched nutrition plan and the right amount of education, real lasting change can be achieved with the correct food choices, without the need too undergo invasive, life-altering surgery.

Governments the world over must look at the root cause of obesity and that is the outdated nutrition guidelines that have been killing millions of people since the 1970s.

Change the guidelines which encourage enormous amounts of sugar and processed foods and we will start seeing results that will benefit generations to come.

Plans to combat obesity include attempts to reduce the amount of sugar in processed foods and impose regulations on junk foods marketing

Eating out when trying to lose weight can become a very stressful experience for people and trying to stick to your diet (I am not a fan of this word), or nutrition plan, when in a restaurant, can be difficult.

However, with a few simple tweaks, eating out can continue to be an enjoyable experience.

1. Ask your waiter or waitress to not bring bread to the table. Ok, it may taste great, but you know it’s no good for you. Remove the temptation before it arrives.

2. Stick to the “homemade foods’. By this I mean, avoid any foods that you are pretty sure came out of a packet in the kitchen. Think ‘real foods’.

3. Everything comes with chips and like the bread, you know it is no good for you. Simply ask to have them swapped out for cooked vegetables, or a salad. Every restaurant has vegetables and salad in the kitchen, they are pretty standard ingredients. Even if you are told they can’t, of course they can. You are the customer. This is what I did in the picture attached to this post. I asked for salad, covered it in extra virgin olive oil and it was absolutely amazing and full of all the right nutrients.

By following these simple steps, hopefully eating out can continue to be an enjoyable, stress free and healthy thing to do.

I haven't done as much baking as I would like recently but I am pretty happy with how this avocado chocolate cake came out.

The avocado gives it a more gooey texture but you can't taste it, which is a bonus with my children. The benefit to me, is that I know the kids are at least getting some super-powered food, whilst they get to enjoy a tasty dessert.

I made this with almond flour, erythritol as a sweetener and 90% dark chocolate, so it is sugar free and it is a great alternative to a high sugar chocolate cake.

UPDATE: COVID-19 and Obesity

For those of you that watched the video I posted yesterday, this story, now everywhere in the UK national press, will hopefully come as no surprise. If you haven't watched the video yet, take a look and then read this story.

I can only hope the PM will now take a look at the drastically flawed Governmental Guidelines on nutrition, because they have played a major role in the escalating obesity crisis.

Boris Johnson is preparing a “much more interventionist” drive to tackle obesity as part of the fight against coronavirus after his spell in hospital with the disease. The prime minister told senior

There is a strong link between obesity and the body's ability to fight COVID-19 successfully. Thankfully, scientists and government are starting to take this seriuously.
