Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Shine bright and take action!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Let’s lift each other up with energy, kindness, and smart steps for breast health.

Get screened:
✔ Book your mammogram, and ask your healthcare provider about the right timing based on your age, history, and risk.
✔ Practice regular breast self-exams, know what is normal for you, and talk to your healthcare provider if you notice any changes.

Keep healthy:
Follow these evidence-based tips to reduce risk:
✔ Eat healthy meals, consisting of wholegrains, vegetables, beans, and fruit. Limit fast foods and processed foods high in fat, starches, or sugars. Limit red and processed meat, choose beans, lentils, fish, or poultry more often. Choose water or unsweetened drinks, and limit alcohol.
✔ Maintain a healthy weight with steady, supportive routines.
✔ Be physically active, aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, and sit less.
✔ Manage stress with simple daily practices, take 2 – 5 minute breathing or mindfulness breaks, walk and spend time outdoors, make time for relaxing activities like music or prayer, and ask for help from a healthcare professional if you need it.
✔ Stay connected with loved ones and your community, make a daily touchpoint, share meals, join a class or volunteer team, and invite a friend for a walk or group workout.
✔ Sleep well, keep a consistent schedule, limit screens and caffeine in the evening, and keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.

You matter, your health matters so schedule your screening, move your body, nourish well, rest well, stay connected, and let’s cheer each other on all month long!

World Su***de Prevention Day: Kindness, Connection, and Support

On 10 September, World Su***de Prevention Day highlights the theme “Changing the Narrative on Su***de.” According to WHO, more than 720,000 people die by su***de each year worldwide, and many deaths are preventable with compassionate connection and timely care. Every life matters!

Evidence from the literature supports that:
✓ Stronger social support is associated with lower risk of suicidal thoughts, plans, attempts, and death.
✓ Small, regular acts of kindness reduce loneliness and strengthen community connection.

How you can help:
• Check in with someone and listen with care and without judgement.
• Offer practical help, for example arranging an appointment with a healthcare professional.
• Share trusted resources and encourage professional support.
• Use respectful, non-stigmatizing language.
• If there is immediate danger, contact your local emergency number.

If you need help:
Reaching out is a strong step toward safety and recovery. Contact your local emergency number or talk to a trusted or a family member or a friend. Please remember that you are not alone!

Understanding Colorectal Cancer (CRC): Key Insights from Recent Research

📘 Did you know? Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks as the third most common cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Addressing this growing health challenge requires awareness, early detection, and advances in prevention and treatment.

📝 In a recent paper Al Kamzari and Constantinou (2025) highlight the following critical insights:

🌟 Risk Factors:
• Modifiable risks include an unhealthy diet (e.g., high intake of red and processed meats), smoking 🚬, and excessive alcohol consumption 🍷.
• Non-modifiable factors include age (50+ years) and genetic predispositions 🔬.

🩺 Detecting CRC Early is Crucial!
Early detection through colonoscopy, f***l-based tests, and imaging techniques improves survival significantly. Screening is essential, especially for individuals at higher risk.

💊 Exciting Progress in Treatment:
• Early-stage CRC is treated primarily with surgical interventions.
• For advanced stages, immunotherapy 🌐 and targeted therapies like kinase inhibitors are showing promise.
• Cutting-edge approaches, such as AI-driven diagnostics and cancer vaccines, are paving the way for personalized treatment options.

🌱 Prevention Strategies:
• A healthy diet 🌽, regular exercise 🏃♂️, and minimizing alcohol and to***co use can significantly lower CRC risks.
• Aspirin and vitamin D have potential preventive roles, though further research is needed.

⚡️ A Look Ahead:
By integrating innovative treatments, scalable prevention, and equitable access to screenings, we can reduce the global CRC burden 🌍.
💡 Talk to your doctor today, and take proactive steps to protect your health.

Could Our Gut Be Fueling Heart Failure?

A new research article by Shoukry et al (2025) summarises the evidence on the powerful connection between gut health and heart failure:

• When the heart weakens, reduced blood flow compromises the intestinal barrier. This allows bacteria and their by-products to leak into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and worsening cardiac function.
• Patients with heart failure have increased levels of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, and reduced levels of Bifidobacteria and Bacteroides and harmful metabolites—including short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine, and trimethylamine N-oxide—play a key role in this process.
• Researchers are currently investigating the role of plant-rich diets, prebiotics, antibiotics, and even f***l microbial transplantation and natural phytochemicals in improving gut health and reducing the risk of heart failure.
