Anyone reading this mornings newspapers will note that the march in Istanbul and other cities through out Turkey in support of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan which was estimated to be in excess of twenty million people at a ceremony marking the first anniversary of the country's crushed military coup was over looked by all the leading newspapers, if it is not Trump related it is not deemed to be news, Now a national holiday the 15th of July 2016 will forever be remembered as the day when 250 young people gave their lives and in excess of 2000 others were wounded to stop elements within the Army and Police from taking control of the country. One women who lost her husband and her only son during the attempted coup, spoke on national television and said if she had two more sons she would gladly see them give their lives for their country, This is the pride the people of Turkey take in their country and their flag, In the 1960's when Minister Bülent Ecevit was told of the killing's of Turkish Cypriots by Greek Cypriots he said not to worry, that for every one killed the people of Turkey would have that day ten more children to replace each and every one. if only the people of Ireland as was seen by the lack of support during Water Meter Protests would take a leaf out of their book .You only had to see the streets of Istanbul last evening packed with people each one carrying the Turkish Flag to feel the pride of these people. Turkey is a growing power in this region and should not be under estimated, with a standing Army of 350,000 personal and twice that number on reserve, and where everyone aged 18 years or over does National Service it is a force to be feared if the wrong party upset them enough

Paul G.Clarke,
Chairman,
2nd Inf Bn Association,
Cathal Brugha Barracks,
Rathmines,
Dublin 6.

Dear Paul,

Congratulations on a MAGNIFICENT PARADE and turnout. There was easily in the region of 450 Veterans on Parade, and close to 200 spectators. The entrance of the pipers was beautiful.Followed by the Veterans, it was awesome.Three principal Flags, were carried, including the National Flag and the Newly Commissioned Flag, of the 35th In Bn ONUC.

I observed Veterans from ONE,IUNVA,2 FAR ASS,5 BN ASS,2 BN ASS,Flags,Pennants from all enlisted personnel associations.Brig Gen Retired Colm Campbell ,as President of 2 BN ASS,was also present.I met Joe Hanley,5 BN ASS after 41 years. The surviving members of A Coy 35th Inf Bn ONUC ,were seated at the head of the Parade. They wore ID Tags.

Two Lords Major on parade, and not a serving PDF officer in sight,I observed one RDF officer.

I was privileged to meet and speak to members of the remaining survivors of A Coy 35th Inf Bn ONUC,some of whom were kind enough to autograph my copy of Declan Power's book " Siege at Jadotville" now a Feature Film.

The Unit History of the 35th Inf Bn ONUC is available at Military Archives on Facsimile. It's an amazing document, comprising 189 pages, with excellent staff work ,reports on Major events,Missions and tasks ,and battle objectives. It includes reports by Comdt Cahalane, Capt Art Magennis DSM and others. It includes Tables of Equipment,Weapons,Ammunition by Quantity and Type,Medical Officer's report, other Specialists' Reports, and Nominal Roll.

This parade was in marked contrast to the Veterans' Day parade that took place in McKee Barracks recently, which was poor by any norm, with the anti-Room of the DFHQ Officers' Mess only open to "Generals and VIPS",with "CULLING" of Veterans and poor amplification. And Representatives of the PDF on parade to reduce the number of Veterans allowed. It's either "Veterans' Day" or NOT!

This was a "Masterclass" in organisation, achieved by a former NCO from A Admin "Ceremonial" ,in co-operation with all other Enlisted Personnel Veterans' " Associations", YOU Sir!

Once more ,congratulations, and best wishes for future events.

With kindest personal regards,

Christopher McQuaid,

Captain Retired.

Attention of COS,
ARCO,
Ceremonial,
DFTC, GOC 1st Inf Bde,
ACOS.
