Spreading coffee pulp, a waste product from coffee production, over degraded lands helps them recover quickly, a recent study found. By dumping 30 truck-loads of coffee pulp on a plot of degraded land in Costa Rica, researchers watched a small forest grow at a remarkable speed in just two years, the...

Memento of the lost village
This pine from Chudobín grows on the rocky headland of the dam called Vír. The name of the pine is in connection with the flooded village of Chudobín.
According to a legend narrated by locals, a devil sat under the pine in the night and played the violin. However it is much more likely that they were hearing the strong winds blowing over the valley.

This pine tree is not only an important landmark but also an impressive testimony to its high resistance to climate change and human impact.

To enable us to fight climate change, do something amazing and plant a tree. 🌲❤️

If you’re exploring indoor trees for your home but aren’t sure where to begin, Pachira aquatica is the tree you want. It is virtually kill-proof, relatively tidy, and grows as large (or as small) as you want. They are also pretty much immune to the most common cause of black thumbs: over-watering!

Also known as the money tree, guiana chestnut, or the saba nut, Pachira aquatica is native to the tropics and thrives near wetlands and swamps. It loves moist soil; hence, the kill-proof factor. It also does well in indirect light, so growing it indoors is no problem—just position it in a fairly sunny spot.

Edible flowers are a fun and easy way to add color and flavor to all sorts of dishes — especially when you can pick them right from your own garden.
Most edible flowers are best eaten raw—simply pick and rinse with water. Flowers will taste and look their best right after they have opened, rather than after they have been open for a few days.
For flowers that look good as well as taste good, consider some of the following:
Alliums. Chives, leeks and garlic are all delicious in green salads, potato and pasta salads and dips.
Nasturtiums. Blossoms have a peppery flavor like watercress.
Marigolds. Use the tiny flowers of signet marigolds, such as Lemon Gem and Tangerine Gem. Their blossoms have a citrus taste.
Pansies and Johnny jump-ups. These flowers have a wintergreen flavor and are pretty on cakes and other desserts. Glaze with warmed jelly for a jeweled look.
Calendula. An easy and prolific edible flower that's easy to grow from seed right in the garden. Separate the petals from the center of the flower and sprinkle the petals into salads.
Anise hyssop. If you like anise, this is the edible flower for you. Separate the florets and add them to sweet or savory dishes. Or use the full flowers to garnish a cheese plate.
Honeysuckle. The blossoms make a pretty addition to salads. Don't use the berries; they're poisonous.
Scarlet runner beans. Mix these bright-red flowers into salads, or in with steamed veggies.
Borage. This fuzzy-leaved herb has sky-blue flowers with a light cucumber taste. Add to fruit salads, green salads or freeze in ice cubes for cold drinks.
Bee balm. This member of the mint family has minty-tasting flowers. Colors range from bright red to purple and pink.
Chamomile. English chamomile has small, daisy-like flowers with an apple-like flavor. If you're allergic to ragweed, you might want to avoid chamomile.
Daylily. Daylily buds and flowers taste a bit like asparagus. They can be used as a garnish, or can be stuffed or made into fritters. Good in stir-frys, too.
Mint. Like bee balm, all flowers of the mint family are edible and have a pleasant taste. Try lemon balm or spearmint in iced tea.
Squash blossoms. Use these as you would daylilies @ Prague, Czech Republic

I’ve listed 8 of my favorite reasons for growing fresh herbs.
1. One of the best benefits of growing your own herbs is having fresh herbs right at your fingertips. You’ll always have the right ingredients waiting for you to make dinner time magic.
2. Adding fresh herbs to your diet is a great way to boost your meal’s vitamin value, but that isn’t the only health benefit you can obtain. Gardening is a wonderful form of exercise. All of that digging, bending, and stretching will pay off in tightly toned muscles, and if you keep at it, you’ll also achieve a bit of weight loss and healthily glowing skin.
3. Save Money – fresh herbs can be expensive and the local shop doesn’t always stock all the herbs you are looking for.
4. Educational – Herb gardening is an educational experience for adults as well as for children. There is always something new to learn, whether it be a new gardening technique, a different recipe, a new and improved use for the herbs you thought you knew so well, or the fascinating history of herbs that dates way back to medieval times.
5. Relieve Stress – Tending, or just visiting a herb garden can do a world of good towards relieving all that built up stress. The sights and scents in your herb garden can delight the senses and revitalize the soul.
6. Growing your own herbs means that you’ll always have more than enough herbs than you can possibly use, leaving you plenty of extras to share!
7. Exotic Variety – Did you know that there are more than 30 different types of basil? The local market will usually only carry the most common. Growing your own herb garden will allow you to sample some of the other more exotic and fun herbs that are out there waiting for you.
8. Good Clean Fun – Okay, well maybe it’s not the cleanest hobby, but gardening and watching your fresh herbs grow is well worth getting dirty. Get out there and start planning your own beautiful and aromatic herb garden. It really is fun, and the benefits are huge!
If you’re stuck and don’t know where to start or just don’t like getting dirty then send a DM or call Ali on 774567754.
