عيد مبارك سعيد. عواشر مبروكة

As we welcome Aid, I extend my warmest wishes to all Muslims around the world. Aid Moubarak!

This season brings with it a unique blend of joy and reflection, a time when the spirit of community and togetherness is more important than ever. Yet, for many among us, this Aid comes with a weight, an unspoken heaviness that lingers in our hearts. It’s a heaviness borne from celebrating away from family, the void of lost loved ones, and the sharp pain of war, displacement, and grief that too many of our brothers and sisters endure.

This year, as we observed Ramadan and celebrate Aid, let’s hold in our hearts those who are navigating these sacred days under the shadow of hardship. The distance, the absence, and the strife many are experiencing lend a different tone to our celebrations, making them unique in ways we wish they weren’t.

Yet, it’s precisely in these moments that our faith, resilience, and unity shine brightest. Let’s remember that even in the face of challenges, our capacity to find hope, to extend a hand of support, and to share the blessings we have is undiminished.

May this Aid remind us of the strength found in unity and the peace that comes from compassion.

We're urged to confront a harsh reality this International Women's Day. Celebrating advancements in women's rights feels not just premature but indecent, especially against the backdrop of current global injustices.

This year, more than ever, should serve as a reality check. If you're just now questioning the narrative of unilinear progress in women's empowerment, you're arriving late to a crucial awakening.

The celebration of individual successes cannot blind us to the systemic disenfranchisement that continues to bind countless women. It's a stark reminder that our fight for gender equality is far from over.

The path to true empowerment and liberation is collective and intersectional.

This International Women's Day, let us pledge to reject superficial celebrations of progress and instead commit to the deep, transformative work that true equality demands. Our journey is one of solidarity, resistance, and relentless pursuit of a future where every woman can claim her space, free from the shackles of systemic oppression.

Wishing all Muslims a blessed Ramadan.
عواشر مبروكة

This sacred month is a profound period of reflection and spirituality, a time when we're encouraged to stretch the bounds of our bodies and minds.

Remember, it often takes 30 to 40 days to form a new habit—let's use this precious time to foster positive changes within ourselves.

A special thought goes out to those, like me and my family, observing away from home, finding strength in their faith despite the distance.

And to all experiencing Ramadan amidst conflict, my heart is with you.

May this month bring peace, transformation, and a renewed sense of purpose to us all. 🌙✨

In a world that's closer yet diverse, teaching Moroccan Darija to our children overseas is not just a language lesson—it's an act of love, a bridge to our rich heritage, and a celebration of enduring family bonds.

It's about keeping the vibrant pulse of Moroccan culture alive, ensuring that the laughter, stories, and wisdom of our ancestors travel across continents to enrich the lives of our next generation.

It's a testament to the resilience of cultural heritage, continually evolving while keeping its roots firmly grounded in the Moroccan soil.

Through Moroccan Darija, we shape identity, connect our children to their roots, empower them to thrive in a multicultural world, and proudly carry the legacy of their Moroccan heritage.

"Where are you from?" It's a simple question, isn't it?

But behind those four words can be a world of curiosity. Some might wonder about your ethnic background, your cultural roots, or simply where you consider home.

It's a question I hear often, and to me, it's just another way to start a conversation, a harmless icebreaker, as long as the intent is friendly and inclusive. So yeah, chill, if you hear it often too!

I usually answer, "I'm Moroccan," as that's likely what people are curious about—my cultural and ethnic background. Yes, it's pretty clear I'm not a local here.

But if I say, "I'm from Munich," that should be just as acceptable. Recognizing and respecting that reply is part of basic etiquette, a fundamental of savoir-vivre.

You see, the essence of this question isn't about the words themselves, but the intention behind them. It's a chance to connect, to expand our understanding of each other, not to draw lines of division.

This question also nudges us to reflect on broader themes. Did you know, for instance, that about 26% of Germany's population has a migration background? Or that 3.5% of the global population lives in a country not originally their own? That's 272 million people!

But let's be real: what does this question truly reveal about someone? Perhaps a lot, or perhaps very little. It can uncover stories and experiences but doesn't define the entirety of a person's identity.

Interestingly, this curiosity isn't exclusive to locals.

Even among my fellow Moroccans, there's a desire to pinpoint exactly where I'm from. Knowing I'm Moroccan isn't enough. They'll inquire about my hometown, the schools I attended, even the neighbourhood I grew up in or where my parents live, all in an attempt to categorise and understand my specific background. Honestly, that can be more exasperating than the original question!

So, as we navigate through these conversations, let's remember the power of open-mindedness.

And now, turning the question around—where are you from?

Embarking on the journey of parenthood is a monumental step. It becomes even more intriguing when this journey unfolds in a foreign land.

Join us in a series where we explore the complexities of becoming a parent abroad, diving into the cultural, social, and emotional facets that shape this unique experience.

"

When children find themselves growing up in a foreign land, distinctly different from their parents' homeland, a multifaceted process of shaping their ethnic identity unfolds.

This phenomenon brings to light the concept of "cultural displacement," a unique emotional journey encountered by many multicultural individuals (Phinney).

This notion delves into the intricate dilemma faced by these children as they grapple with reconciling their affiliation with one cultural group while struggling to identify where they truly belong.

Much the same, embracing biculturalism involves developing proficiencies and sensitivities within two distinct cultural realms, making the path of identity formation all the more intricate for these young individuals.

Cultural identity holds exceptional significance when examining the development and well-being of Moroccan children living abroad within immigrant families.

This is particularly evident during their formative years, a period of heightened vulnerability when cultural identity intertwines significantly with their overall sense of self.

Acculturation, the process of adapting to a new culture, not only impacts individuals on a personal level but also extends its influence to the entire family unit.

Within these families, each member may undergo acculturation at varying paces, resulting in a widening gap in cultural values and practices. This divergence is often noticeable, particularly between the younger generation and their elders, echoing the observations made by Berry (2003).

When roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind.

The ethos of Kanzyana is perfectly encapsulated in this poignant saying.
This African proverb elegantly symbolises our core mission, a dynamic business dedicated to nurturing the cultural and linguistic heritage of Moroccan children growing up far from their ancestral homeland.

In today’s rapidly globalizing world, children of the Moroccan diaspora often find themselves adrift in a sea of diverse cultures and influences.
Kanzyana steps in as an anchor, helping these young minds establish deep, unshakeable roots in their rich Moroccan heritage.
By offering a variety of educational resources tailored for different age groups, Kanzyana ensures that the essence of Moroccan culture – its languages, traditions, and stories – is not only preserved but also celebrated.

The focus on Moroccan languages is particularly vital. By learning Darija, Classical Arabic, or Berber dialects, children don’t just acquire communication skills; they gain access to a world of ancestral wisdom, cultural nuances, and a deeper understanding of their identity. Each word and phrase they learn is a thread connecting them to their past, strengthening their roots.

Moreover, Kanzyana’s emphasis on heritage and culture extends beyond language. Through engaging narratives, historical tales, and vibrant depictions of Moroccan life, children develop a profound appreciation and respect for their heritage. This deep-rooted connection fosters resilience – the "deep roots" that the quote refers to – enabling them to withstand the metaphorical winds of change and challenge.

In essence, Kanzyana’s relevance lies in its ability to empower Moroccan children abroad. By grounding them in the knowledge and pride of their heritage, Kanzyana doesn’t just educate – it equips these young individuals with the confidence and strength to navigate a multicultural world. The deeper their roots grow in Moroccan soil, the more unshaken they remain by the winds of global challenges, thriving in any environment they find themselves in.

I have been seeing this word a lot recently. We all did I guess!

I have always been against the homogenisation of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) under the 'Arab' umbrella. It has very often (all the time) been misinterpreted as Amazigh chauvinism.
It is not. Every time I am asked "are you Arab" my answer is "I am Moroccan".

Why does it matter?

Well, if you havent noticed yet, this sweeping generalisation is more than a linguistic convenience; it shapes the very framework of foreign policy both within the region and by external powers.

Let's dive deeper into understanding these diverse identities and why recognizing them matters in both domestic and international landscapes. Join the conversation!

Think about this: When we teach our children math and science, we're preparing them for exams. But when we share with them stories of our ancestors, we're preparing them for life. Kavita Bhupta Ghosh once said, 'Education is incomplete without learning self-preservation.' And what is self-preservation for our little ones growing up miles away from where our stories began?

It's knowing that they are the descendants of civilization builders, the grandchildren of warriors and poets, dreamers and doers. It's giving them roots so deep that no matter where they go, they can't help but stand tall.

In a world that's constantly changing, where they might feel like little boats adrift in a vast ocean, our stories are their anchors. They teach resilience – because every tale of our forefathers is a lesson in facing storms. They instill pride – for in their veins runs the blood of people who built wonders, fought for freedom, and never gave up hope.

So, dear fellow parents, especially those of us nurturing our saplings in foreign soil, let’s make recounting our glorious past a bedtime ritual, a dinner table conversation. Let's laugh about the mischiefs of our childhood, shed a tear or two for the struggles of our forebears, and beam with pride over our cultural riches. This isn't just heritage talk; it's equipping our children with an invisible armor, a sense of self so strong that no challenge is too big, no dream too far-fetched.

After all, aren't we all just stories in the end? Let's give our children the most beautiful ones to tell.

11/11/2023

And as I am sharing books with you from time to time maybe we can make it our Friday Tradition (even if today is Saturday) . Every week I will randomly select a political book and share with you the main ideas.

This week's very randomly selected book is a book I had to read a few times as a postgrad:
"The origins of totalitarianism" by Hannah Arendt

Why political books if you are mainly talking about parenting abroad?
Awalane, because parenting is political.

Taniyane,
In the journey of parenting, grasping political concepts like is crucial.

This is where the idea of "name it to tame it" gains immense value. By identifying and understanding the intricate workings of political concepts and ideologies, we move beyond mere observation to informed engagement.

This approach helps demystify complex phenomena, making them more accessible and less intimidating.

It's not just about dissecting global politics; it extends to recognizing and understanding the dynamics in our everyday social environments.

As citizens, our role transcends passive observation. By turning knowledge into a tool for active participation, we empower ourselves to navigate societal landscapes with awareness and resilience.

This understanding is key to fostering a society of individuals who are not only informed but also capable of contributing to meaningful change and progress.

History teaches everything, even the future."

When raising children abroad, we face unique challenges in ensuring they receive a balanced understanding of their roots. It's more than just stories; it's about identity, pride, and grounding.

Our children should know the strength and resilience of their ancestors, the tales of their heritage. Let's empower them with knowledge that helps them stand tall, no matter where they are.

Teaching them history, not just as a subject, but as a powerful lens through which they can understand their roots and navigate their future, becomes more vital than ever. It's crucial that we, as parents, bridge the gap between what they might be taught in school and what we have learned by imparting a holistic understanding of our heritage, culture, and past.

Our children deserve to know the full story, to embrace the richness of their ancestry, and to grow into compassionate, informed global citizens.

So, let's commit to being the historians of our own family's legacy, ensuring that our children inherit not just a history book but a treasure trove of wisdom that will guide them toward a brighter future.
