We’ve recently had the joy of hosting an apprenticeship student from Estonia in our ceramic studio. And it got me thinking.
Before I entered the realm of clay, I imagined it like baking – create, fire, and voilà! But oh, how wrong I was 🫣
Ceramics, much like Tea, have a thousand years of history. Yet, even in the present day, it demands loads of patience and passion. It involves not just one, but two (and sometimes three) firings and a myriad of skillful steps in between. It’s a dance with clay, fire, water, air, and time.
I never understood before why even the most talented ceramists may create seemingly impractical teapots or cups that may burn hands or lips. The answer turned out to be simple - mere knowledge of clay isn’t enough to craft functional teaware for meaningful practice. A ceramist needs to love tea deeply and passionately, allowing he or she honestly answer the question - is it truly good for tea, or do I simply like it because I made it?
Since it takes a lifetime to explore and understand the world of tea, just like it does for the world of ceramics, I find immense joy when people appear at the crossroads of these two worlds. Such individuals have the potential to craft tea ware that us tea people will cherish year after year.
The clay whispers secrets, and the tea imparts wisdom. Together, they mold a good tea potter. May more ceramists fall passionately in love with tea, enriching our choices for exceptional teaware 💛🍃💛
