✨ This year the Earth Overshoot day fell two months ago - on 22nd of August 🌍

This initiative, or more precisely to be called - a reminder, is the calculated illustrative date on which humanity's resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources that year.

This (EOD) for a specific year is determined by dividing the world biocapacity, by the world ecological footprint, and multiplying it by the number of days in a year.

In other words - people's demand in 2020 has already surpassed Earth's supply. One could say that from this point we are living on ecological debt 👾

In comparison, last year the Overshoot Day was on July 29, which is almost a month earlier than in 2020. Undoubtedly, this year's unusual circumstances with the pandemic have given some positive changes and supposedly slowed down our fast-paced lives.

The question is, what can we learn from this and will we? 💭

Each of us has the possibility to contribute, in order to achieve effective change. All shifts, also small one's matter. Moreover - the goal of all actions doesn't have to be perfection but rather the shared ambition.

✨ The decisions and the consequential actions of humans have been increasingly pushing the planetary boundaries. Effort in multiple areas is needed in order to reach the collective goals towards a healthy planet. There are various roads that lead in the same direction, all of those roads being equally valid and vital. I see promoting and inspiring conscious consumption as one of them 🌍

Encouraging and stimulating a more sustainable consumer behaviour is an important commitment. And what any of us personally can do to support it - is to start with ourselves. Our own personal choices matter.

Furthermore, what accelerates small personal shifts into bigger-scale transformation is raising the overall awareness by spreading new ideas and information. Sharing your individual changes with others multiplies its effects 🤝

Communicating through sharing can be very effective since it creates the potential to inspire action. Especially because if nobody ever finds out about what you’re doing - how can they get inspired?

What is important to note though - nobody wants to be criticised or picked apart. We can encourage others to contribute to real and lasting change without judging them for doing things differently.

I deeply believe that reaching the goals of environmental well-being is collectively doable. While there are countless steps that need to be taken from all sides, our personal decisions and actions are small pieces of this mosaic 🔮 // Solvita ✌

✨ So many people perceive the environmental activism of others as disapproval of their own lifestyle choices. We often wonder - who really is responsible and who has to act first and/or most? As a result, we accuse the 'other' as the root of the problem and expect others to 'fix' that.

Regarding environmental protection, the individual tends to blame the big companies whereas the companies push the responsibility back to the consumers. Companies urge consumers to make more sustainable personal choices, often ignoring their own obvious obligation to act ➿

However, what happens to those who commit to individual actions hoping to create some positive impact? They are, of course, unable to live on this planet without leaving any footprint. And that often guarantees exposure to criticism.

I have concluded that it absolutely isn’t about being the hero who saves the world. It is, however, about using money as a way to vote. In that way, with our personal and consumer choices, we tell the industries and governments what we want more or less of 🌐

In the end, nobody is really able to do enough. As we are humans who still have to live on this planet somehow, being perfect is far from realistic. And after all, the goal is not perfection but rather the shared ambition.

Ultimately there are two options in today’s society. Doing something and being judged for that. Or doing nothing and being judged for that. // Solvita✌

✨ Even though sometimes I absolutely hate that word, I am a consumer. We all are. For years I've been fascinated by the different purchasing behaviours in the western world and how careless they often can be. I'm sure that for many of you the thought of “an individual footprint” has crossed your mind. I personally contemplate it a lot. So, with an aim to make my life a bit easier, I have my individual shopping guide that helps my decision-making process when purchasing any household items & other goods ✅

I'm always paying close attention to such details as product ingredients, origin and its packaging, along with the overall reputation of a brand 💭💭

Over the last few years, I've been noticing new types of products becoming available. Products that focus more on what is actually important while staying away from ingredients that can be simply avoided or alternatively - replacing them with the naturally sourced. That, as well as rethinking the supply chains and redesigning the packaging to eliminate waste.

It's good to see the awareness level slowly increasing by such new goods being introduced more and more often 💫

How do you go about your purchasing behaviours? Do you have any specific characteristics of products that are the most important to you? We're curious to hear. // Zane ✌

✨ "What you need to solve a complex challenge is a complex solution” - a simple but excellent remark by James George during the Ellen MacArthur Foundation webinar as a part of the 'From Linear To Circular' course, which I've been attending for the past couple weeks.

I often feel individuals overlook the depth & scale of the global issues we all collectively face. Being a part of the course has yet again confirmed for me - in Sustainability, there is no such approach as “one size fits all” 👾

External processes are a reflection of personal internal circumstances. Therefore, I see the work towards shifting one's mindset as an important initiator of effective collective action. Hence I believe it to be highly essential for individuals driving the change to curate a frame of mind filled with: ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍓 open-mindedness - being flexible and receptive to transformation,
🍓 empathy - the capacity to understand other perspectives and experiences,
🍓 curiosity - a strong desire to receive new information, ideas and arguments. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

✨I do not read or watch the news. I have, however, a couple of trusted sources whose opinion I value highly - over the years Lidewij Edelkoort has become one of these people for me. Lidewij, often called Li, is a Dutch trend forecaster anticipating lifestyle trends. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have been attending Li's seminars for the past 3 years and during the last online seminar, she expressed a rather hopeful outlook in regards to the state of our world, which I guess is a somewhat unpopular opinion these days. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Combining the information presented during the mentioned above webinar and my personal observations, I am noticing 3 trends which are long-overdue to be picked-up on a mainstream level: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❇️ local production: products both produced and sold domestically,
❇️ shared responsibility: transparency of the production processes from the manufacturers and consumers full awareness of these processes,
❇️ shifting points of view around item disposability: people on an individual level becoming educated about how things are made and that they should not be easily disposable. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Li also emphasised the benefits of slowing down during the last months and I personally have taken advantage of that as well. This time has allowed me to reconnect with myself, to reassess what is important and to value time way more. Also, it opened extra space for getting to my long-overdue To-Do list tasks ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

✨I firmly believe that targeting the mechanisms of large-scale consumption and production is key to resolving a multitude of global environmental problems. Thus, since being introduced to I was instantly drawn to the targets of - Responsible Consumption and Production. ⠀⠀⠀

Last year when I was presented with the opportunity to participate at UNLEASH it was no doubt that I should work with the namely SDG; this experience further expanded my belief on the importance of tackling the issues around the current ways of consumption and production.

With this year taking place in Shenzhen, China, I am beyond happy that my better half will be apart of the wonderful madness. Following my thirst for world exploration, I will be joining him for his travels to this November and can not wait to expand my horizons further! // Zane✌ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Fashion is one of the past decade's rare economic success stories - the industry has grown at 5.5 per cent annually and now is estimated to be worth around $2.4 trillion, according to a report from McKinsey & Company.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Although the staggering numbers, this industry is infamous for being one of the most challenging sectors due to inconsistency for implementing sustainable strategies while comprising numerous social and environmental challenges.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Having said that, there is a movement growing with a speed of light, consisting of first-movers putting all their efforts on improving the many complex aspects of fashion industry. Youth Fashion Summit being one of them. Established in 2012 the sustainability education program and idea generation platform aimed at young professionals engaged within sustainability and fashion has been taking place in Copenhagen during the first days of May 🤝

Purchase Power: an understanding exists that most often we as consumers do not even realise how much influence we hold within our purchase power. Buying often seems like a simple exchange of goods & values - but it is a bit more complicated than that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
ISO explains it: "Every purchasing decision we make has an impact on the environment, economy and society - from the energy we use to power our computers to the conditions of the workers who made the item.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What organisation purchases and who it purchases from can have far-reaching implications (..) If public & private sector organisations took the time to ensure their purchasing reflects broader goals linked to resource efficiency, climate change, social responsibility and economic resilience, we could surely expect to reduce poverty, improve human rights and mitigate our negative impacts on the environment."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While many are already working hard to ensure a hassle-free purchasing experience for all, make sure and do your part by raising critical questions towards the companies which services & goods you are purchasing 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️
