Overweight Kids Outnumber Underweight Globally: A Landmark Health Shift

For the first time in recorded history, overweight children now outnumber underweight ones worldwide, according to a new study in The Lancet released on October 8, 2025.

Researchers analyzing data from 1985 to 2025 found childhood obesity has surged tenfold in four decades, reshaping global health trends.

This marks a dramatic pivot, with 150 million kids obese compared to 100 million underweight.

The shift stems from dietary and lifestyle changes: processed foods, sugary drinks, and less physical activity are key culprits.

Fast food’s rise and urban lifestyles have fueled this, especially in middle-income countries where undernutrition once prevailed, like India and Brazil. Sedentary habits—screen time up 50% since 2000—compound the issue.

Experts sound the alarm, noting childhood obesity spikes risks for diabetes, heart disease, and premature death.

Public health leaders are pushing for tougher food regulations, better education, and wider access to healthy meals to reverse this. Without action, the next generation could face a health crisis unlike any before.

Tummy Time is Really Important For Babies Because It Helps With Their Physical, Motor, And Sensory Development. Here's Why It Matters:

Strengthens Muscles 🏋️‍♀️💪:
Lying on the tummy makes babies work against gravity, which helps strengthen their neck, shoulders, arms, and back muscles. These are the same muscles they’ll later use for rolling, sitting, crawling, and walking.

Prevents Flat Spots 🛏️
Spending too much time lying on their back can cause flat spots on the back of the head (positional plagiocephaly). Tummy time gives the head a break and helps shape it naturally.

Promotes motor skills 🤲:
Reaching, kicking, pushing up, and turning the head during tummy time improve coordination and motor Development.

Supports Sensory Development 👀👂:
When babies are on their tummy, they see and feel the world from a different perspective, which stimulates their vision, balance, and spatial awareness.

Encourages Milestones 🚼:
Regular tummy time lays the foundation for rolling over, crawling, and eventually walking.
