In my earlier life I was an artist. I danced in New York with Shen Wei, also some smaller companies, and showed my own work. I produced 10 seasons of beautiful performance. That part got put into the background as I developed an academic career, studied philosophy and developed shamanic practices. Now, it wants a voice again. It wants a deep expression. And this is coming through rhythm. I am drawn so powerfully to Flamenco, Tango and the drum.
Here in Granada, I’ve been able to witness such blending. From cultural arts contexts, to high art theatre, to the gypsy families in caves and young people on the streets. Flamenco moves the spirit within the dancer, the singer, the musician. Whatever their story, it is laid open and there it is healed, acknowledged and alchemised. Places like this, where religions, peoples, values and lifestyles merge - these are places rich for discovery..
It looks like I will come to Granada at least three more times this year. We removed only 2/3 of the mercury fillings, this was enough for my body. My liver hurt that afternoon and I wept tears of forgiveness. I sang in the streets. I sang in the hostel. I sang in the quiet of my heart. What is imbedded releases. So next visit, the remaining mercury will go. The new retainer will arrive to me. And then we will keep following.
Arts have the power to bring us to human connection. To ourselves first of all, to each other, and in communities. Arts are vital, so in this time of chaos, please make moments for your art. Sing while washing dishes. Or make a rhythm at the bus stop. Rumi writes, ‘You wake up in the morning sad and lonely like any other day. Don’t go into the study, pick up a musical instrument. There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the ground.’
