Differential reinforcement is a behavior modification technique that increases a desired behavior by reinforcing it and/or decreases an undesired behavior by withholding reinforcement. It is a two-part process that involves reinforcing appropriate actions while withholding reinforcement for undesirable behaviors (which is also known as "extinction”).
So extinction
- Is one of the principles of ABA.
- it is ethical to use.
- its rarely used by itself , as also punishment rarely used by it self.
- it’s ok that a child go through extinction burst while in the process of extinction during difrential reinforcment or functional communication training or any other teaching procedure.
But it’s un-ethical to use any kind of interventions that would use withholding reinforcement to teach a target behavior that beyond students abilities.
