Coming soon!
Training sessions for riders using the Franklin Method!

Equestrians need to be coordinated and balanced in their own bodies to be able to adequately adapt to the constant movement beneath them while riding. They also need to be mentally focused in order to connect and communicate with their horse.

What is the Franklin Method?

The Franklin Method combines anatomical embodiment and imagery to improve awareness, train the mind-body connection, and produce efficient movement.

With practice of the Franklin Method, equestrians become more aware of not only their own movement, but also the movement of their horse. Consequently, the connection between horse and rider becomes more clear and precise.

With more coordinated movement you’ll experience improved strength, flexibility and posture naturally in your riding.

If you are able to produce more efficient and coordinated movement, your horse will be able to do the same. The result of this is a rider and horse that look balanced easeful in their movement.

It is official! The Laser Therapy is available!

What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy is a form of therapy that is side-effect-free and painless, can be used for all acute and chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which is becoming increasingly popular, as a complementary therapy method.

Laser therapy is a form of treatment with energetic light that penetrates deep into the tissue and initiates healing processes there, in addition to an increase in blood circulation and analgesic effect.

Due to the high pe*******on depth of the impulse-diode therapy laser into the soft tissue, the degradation products of the metabolism, which are responsible for the pain, are eliminated more quickly and the improved blood circulation situation ensures a rapid removal of these substances. This can significantly shorten the healing phase.

Some of the laser energy is also converted into chemical reaction energy, whereby molecules are directly stimulated by the transmission of electrons and indirectly by the formation of oxygen radicals. This results in an increase in the activity of energy metabolism, which is called “biostimulation”.

Laser therapy is a highly effective alternative to drug treatment.

The use of Laser Therapy:

Excellent results are achieved in the treatment of tendon diseases and shackle damage, chronic diseases, muscular problems and acute injuries. Laser therapy is doping-free and can therefore be used in tournament sports and for rehabilitation and prophylaxis. Laser therapy opens up new ways to save on pain medications, reduce side effects and prevent expensive, high-risk operations.

Lets talk about Hot vs. Cold Therapies!
It is important to know when to apply either of these therapies. Both can help relieve pain and promote healing for a variety of injuries if used correctly.

Hot Therapy: Applying heat to the affected area will promote blood flow, ease tension in the muscles, and reduce stiffness. Warm compresses and heating pads are common examples of hot therapy. Issues such as muscle strains and joint stiffness are responsive to hot therapy.

Cold Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area will help reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation. Ice boots and cold hosing are two common types of cold therapy. Acute issues such as sprains or strains as well as arthritis can benefit from cold therapy.

Not every medical condition may benefit from hot or cold therapy, so it's always recommended to consult your veterinarian or physician before applying either if you are unsure. Additionally, since excessive heat or cold can harm tissue, it's crucial to apply these treatments carefully and safely.

Lets talk about the Muscle Brachiocephalicus!
The brachiocephalicus runs from the poll down to the point of the shoulder. Originating at the mastoid process and at C1-4 and inserting at the deltoid tuberosity.
It is split into two sections at the clavicular: M. Cleidobrachialis and M. Cleidomastoideus.

The function of this muscle is to bring the limb forward and extend the shoulder, extend the head and neck and flex the head and neck to the same side.
Atrophy in this muscle is very rare, in fact the issue seen most in this muscle is an overdevelopment!
The overdevelopment could be an indicator that the horse is heavy on the forehand or have a sore forelimb.

When the muscle function is compromised it mostly leads to trouble tracking to one side, difficulty bending, shortened stride, tripping and difficulty picking up a lead.

Adrenaline and cortisol are among the hormones that are released by the body in reaction to stress. The "fight or flight" reaction, which gets the body ready to react to a threat by raising the heart rate and blood pressure and pumping blood to the muscles, is brought on by adrenaline. The "stress hormone," cortisol, is known to help control how the body reacts to stress.

The continuous release of cortisol, however, can have adverse effects on the body when stress becomes chronic or persistent. Muscle soreness and weakness may result from cortisol's ability to weaken down muscles. Additionally, it may result in widespread bodily inflammation, which raises the possibility of pain and injury.
Serotonin and dopamine are neurotransmitters that control mood and motivation. Chronic stress can cause a decrease in their synthesis. This may result in passiveness, a lack of control, and a decline in interest in physical activity.

It's crucial to learn how to manage stress if you want to avoid its negative effects. This can include massage techniques in your horse's daily routine, taking your horse for daily hand walks or hand grazing, reducing the workload, but the most important step is identifying the source of the stress and taking steps to eliminate it.

Lets talk about this very important topic!
German Reins or Draw Reins as some people call it are a tool that goes through the rings of the horses bit on both sides and get attached to either the sides of the girth (attachment method 1) or in the middle of the girth between the horses forelimbs (attachment method 2).
Attachment Method 1: is mainly used to keep the horse in a neutral position
Attachment Method 2: closes the angle between the head and the neck more or can be used for long and low training.

But in both cases if used incorrectly it can cause way more harm than it would help you or your horse.
Many people believe that when their horse is not moving on the bit, not stretching long and low or is uncontrollable that this tool is the way to go. WRONG!
This tool puts a lot of of force in the horses mouth which makes them lower their head, but this does not mean that they are using their body and muscles in a correct way.
It can cause a lot more tension in their body, make them use muscles in a wrong way and can even go as far as causing inflammations in the spine and joints.
When I watch people use this tool on their horses I see these problems:
- riders hold the draw reins shorter than the actual reins so all the control goes to the stronger force in their mouth
- horses go behind the bit trying to escape the force and end up doing "ROLLKUR" which is an old school training method that is now banned in most foreign countries and got labeled as torture
- horses use the wrong muscles and get more tense which only causes a viscous never ending cycle

So this tool should only be used by experts!

Even if you keep the draw reins long it wont make a big difference with most horses. Horses are very intelligent animals and dont forget easily, so as soon as you put on this tool they know exactly what is coming and tense up their body.

If you wanna make a difference with your horse and help them improve dont use any tools! Go read books about the correct training of horses, learn the basics and practice a lot. It will improve your feeling and the well-being of your beloved horse!

Lets talk about the Muscle Latissimus Dorsi!
The latissimus dorsi is a superficial shoulder and back muscle of the horse. Many of my patients lack muscle mass in their top line and that causes weakness throughout the horses body.
It originates at the thoracolumbar fascia (back fascia), attaching to the supraspinous ligament and at the spinous processes from T3 all the way back to the sacral vertebrae. It travels down and inserts at the medial aspect of the humerus.
The function of this muscle depends on the forelimbs location. If the limb is on the ground it provides a propulsion to the whole body, drawing it forward. When the limb is off the ground it flexes the shoulder joint and lifts the leg.
Atrophy in this muscle could be an indicator that there is a saddle fit, girth issue or ill-balanced rider. Hoof health also has a great impact on the forelimb therefor impacting this muscle.
When the muscle function is compromised it can show in many ways:
- short strides
- difficulty lifting the forelimbs
- tripping
- visible spine and ribs

Lets talk about this interesting topic!
Many times horses start resisting, refusing and even bucking or show a change in their personality and the reason for that could simply be because they are overwhelmed.
We sometimes ask too much of them, more than they may be physically or mentally capable to do. It can cause them physical pain and drain them mentally which leads us to the very important factor, TAKING A BREAK!

Just like humans, horses need to take breaks and get the chance to shut down and relax. Letting them loose, give them a chance to play with other horses and walk around the stable freely and let them be curious about new things will help them relax mentally.
When we talk about physical breaks I dont mean to stop riding or working them. I am talking about changing up their routine a bit. Maybe give them a break from jumping for a few weeks, maybe introduce fun activities like games in your riding routine, and dont ask too much of them for a while. Once they had a good break from their usual routine they will come back even stronger mentally and physically and will be more willing to do what you ask of them.

Many horses are misunderstood and get labeled as aggressive, naughty and unwilling, while in fact they could just be showing signs of pain, discomfort or simply that they are not physically capable of what is asked of them.

Listen to your horses, try to understand them, question yourself and second guess your ways and methods first before blaming your horses!
If you are not sure where the problem is, ask your physician for help and get your horses checked.

Lets talk about the Musculus Trapezius!
This is one of the most important muscles and one that is affected in most of my patients.
The Trapezius covers the withers and part of the shoulders and is connected to the Vertebrae C2 and T10.
It is split into two sections: Pars Cervicalis and Pars Thoracica.

Pars Cervicalis: Moves the shoulders forward and upward

Pars Thoracica: Moves the shoulder upward and backward

The function of this muscle gets compromised by ill-fitting tack such as too small saddles, too thick pads and wrong forced training such as German Reins.

When the muscle function is compromised it mostly leads to muscle atrophy which shows as a noticeably fallen in area below the withers and above the shoulders and a visible spine due to a weak top line.

The Trapezius is a very important muscle especially for disciplines such as Show Jumping.

One major condition I sadly see too often are atrophied muscles in my patients.
Muscle Atrophy can have several causes such as Ill-fitting tack, Malnutrition, Chronic Disease, Aging, Inactivity of the Muscles and even Neurological Conditions.
Most common factors I encounter are Ill-fitting tack, Malnutrition and wrong training methods.
These are factors that can be easily remedied and therefor improve the muscle mass of the horses.
Factors such as Aging, Neurological Conditions and Chronic Diseases sadly cannot be reversed, but thankfully can be minimized as much as possible to help the horse maintain the muscles mass it has and even achieve some improvements.

I will start posting regular post of the Equine Anatomy and explain the function of each muscle to raise awareness of how to localize them, what they should and shouldnt look like and how to train them.
