We could not be happier with the Fastest butterfly swimmer, Farida Ossman. Great effort, great sacrifices on her behalf as well as her parents, now is payoff time. From running during school midday break time to make it to our office for treatment, then quickly back to class, then after school training, home for studying and finishing school work, sleep, then back again at 5:00am for swim training, her daily routine was never for the faint hearted. Champions are truly the ones that show up everyday, and do the best job possible. Well earned Farida and keep up the good work.

Travel Aches and Strains Can be a Pain in the Back

Traveling season has started with the summer getting hotter and hotter by the week, and most families are seeking to cool off on the beech for the coming two months. Traveling can be rough on the body. Whether you are traveling alone on business or on your way to a sunny resort with your family, long hours in a car or an airplane can leave you stressed, tired, stiff and sore.

"Prolonged sitting can wreak havoc on your body, even if you travel in the most comfortable car or opt to fly first class, certain pressures and forces from awkward positions can result in restricted blood flow. One of the biggest insults to your system from prolonged sitting is the buildup of pressure in the blood vessels in your lower legs. Contracting and relaxing the muscles helps the blood flow properly."

Dr. Habib suggests the following tips and advice to fight the pains and strains of travel before they occur.

Warm Up, Cool Down
Treat travel as an athletic event. Warm up before settling into a car or plane, and cool down once you reach your destination. Take a brisk walk to stretch your hamstring and calf muscles.

In the Car:
Adjust the seat so you are as close to the steering wheel as comfortably possible. Your knees should be slightly higher than your hips. Place four fingers behind the back of your thigh closest to your knee. If you cannot easily slide your fingers in and out of that space, you need to re-adjust your seat.

Consider a back support. Using a support behind your back may reduce the risk of low-back strain, pain or injury. The widest part of the support should be between the bottom of your rib cage and your waistline.

Exercise your legs while driving to reduce the risk of any swelling, fatigue or discomfort. Open your toes as wide as you can, and count to 10. Count to five while you tighten your calf muscles, then your thigh muscles, then your gluteal muscles. Roll your shoulders forward and back, making sure to keep your hands on the steering wheel and your eyes on the road.

To minimize arm and hand tension while driving, hold the steering wheel at approximately 3 o'clock and 7 o'clock, periodically switching to 10 o'clock and 5 o'clock.

Do not grip the steering wheel. Instead, tighten and loosen your grip to improve hand circulation and decrease muscle fatigue in the arms, wrists and hands.

While always being careful to keep your eyes on the road, vary your focal point while driving to reduce the risk of eye fatigue and tension headaches.

Take rest breaks. Never underestimate the potential consequences of fatigue to yourself, your passengers and other drivers.

In an Airplane:
Stand up straight and feel the normal "S" curve of your spine. Then use rolled-up pillows or blankets to maintain that curve when you sit in your seat. Tuck a pillow behind your back and just above the belt line and lay another pillow across the gap between your neck and the headrest. If the seat is hollowed from wear, use folded blankets to raise your buttocks a little.

Check all bags heavier than 5-10 percent of your body weight. Overhead lifting of any significant amount of weight should be avoided to reduce the risk of pain in the lower back or neck. While lifting your bags, stand right in front of the overhead compartment so the spine is not rotated. Do not lift your bags over your head, or turn or twist your head and neck in the process.

When stowing belongings under the seat, do not force the object with an awkward motion using your legs, feet or arms. This may cause muscle strain or spasms in the upper thighs and lower back muscles. Instead, sit in your seat first, and using your hands and feet, gently guide your bags under the seat directly in front of you.

While seated, vary your position occasionally to improve circulation and avoid leg cramps. Massage legs and calves. Bring your legs in, and move your knees up and down. Prop your legs up on a book or a bag under your seat.

Do not sit directly under the air controls. The draft can increase tension in your neck and shoulder muscles.

Once at your desired destination it is always advisable to make a swift body check and if anything seems a bit out of the ordinary, do not wait until matters escalate, it is always good to handle issues once discovered and a visit to the neuro-muscular physician could help you avoid chronic consequences.

Safe travels and a great summer to all.

I never expected!
When I moved back to Egypt, even though I am specialized in Sports Medicine and Injuries, I never thought that I would actually be treating many athletes in Cairo. My idea about sports in Egypt the time I left Cairo which was around the early nineties was that Football Dominated the arena. I could not be more happily surprised to be working with some of the most highly conditioned athletes in the world, between Squash world champions to Swimming Divas to boxing Olympian medalists to Martial arts Tennis addicts Scratch and Pro Golfers Gymnists not to forget kite surfers. It has been a great personal pleasure to work with those young talents and realize the level of commitment that involves the whole family. Parents dedicate their lives their vacation time not to forget the financial burdens to the passion of their young ones. Some parents though get over carried in their drive and often do the mistake of trying to fulfill their own dreams through someone else's life their kid son or daughter. This often has the young coach ambitions jamming in and trying to capitalize on such a drive which usually ends in a Burn Out Syndrome, where quick victories carried on the back of multiple cumulative injuries lead to the ultimate loss and burn out of the young talent.
For those who manage to balance their act where your ultimate goal is longevity trying to avoid as well as early treat and contain minor sports injuries before they develop into a chronic situation that shortens the life span of the sport for some of those athletes. We have to learn how to develop "Highly Conditioned Athletes" in the proper professional long term planned studied methodology which would ultimately lead us on the way of watching those young talents thrive and shine on the international arena more often than we would have expected. Wishing everyone a free spirited Summer Season.

Sports Medicine,

Just came back last night from Chicago where I participated in a "Functional Assessment and Treatment of Golf Injuries"seminar. There is a consensus about the benefits of playing golf especially walking the course while carrying or not, a golf bag. Estimated calories lost are 1954 and 1485 Kcal. respectively. Yet such a game that looks so fluid when watching an elite professional golfer swing is hardly showing the complexity and speed of such a move.
Golf is considered the most complex and difficult bio-mechanical movement for humans where a very asymmetric move in high rotation is commissioned to garner a huge speed at the club head just at the point of impact with the ball. This compiles a lot of loaded rotation on the lower back as well as an enormous effort in sequencing such move to be correctly timed starting at the feet hips torso shoulders forearms and wrists in that particular order. To be good at the sport you are expected to practice those moves where a few hundred repetitions are made every training on the range or going out on the course. Injury is a liability for both professional golfers as well as amateurs.
So how to deal with Injures without disrupting the golfing season: Do not have them in the first place. This is achievable by following a good warming up routine as well as pre-playing preparations and correcting wrong techniques, and using properly fitted equipment. Getting immediate care if possible as this would decrease the healing time and allow a Neuromuscular Chiropractor and Sports Injuries Specialist to identify not only the injury and treat it but also be able to nail the cause if it is a faulty technique or due to inappropriate equipment and provide advice and drills for fixing that, otherwise it is only a matter of time before it becomes a repeated injury.

It is certainly a great idea to look forward and get out on the weekend for a round or two of Golf, but make sure you are both physically and technically prepared for that after sitting eight hours daily on your desk during the week.

For advice in regards to how to prepare for the Golf season, setting up a well formulated warm up routine or management of any chronic or acute Sports related injuries, I would be very glad to answer any of your questions. Now grab your clubs and go out there WALKING the course.
