What are LAMDA exams?
The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art is the oldest drama school in the UK. Many famous actors trained at LAMDA, including Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Richard Harris (Harry Potter), Jemma Redgrave (Doctor Who), Ruth Wilson (Luther), David Suchet (Poirot), Hermione Norris (Cold Feet)... and me!
A LAMDA exam is the speech and drama equivalent of a music grade and are perfect for students from age 6 to 18. LAMDA exams cover a range of disciplines, including:
Acting
Speaking Verse and Prose
Speaking in Public
Shakespeare
Exams can be taken at four levels:
Entry Level
Level 1 – Grades 1, 2, 3
Level 2 – Grades 4 and 5
Level 3 – Grades 6, 7 and 8 (Bronze Medal, Silver Medal, Gold Medal)
There are also Introductory Examinations for young performers (5–7 years) who are taking the first steps into the LAMDA experience.
LAMDA is not just for those interested in drama. It is useful on many levels... for building confidence, developing language skills and even improving concentration.
Welcome! My name is Leigh Stevenson I'm an actor/director/drama teacher who specialises in working with
young people on LAMDA exams and drama school auditions.
As an actor, I trained at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and have worked extensively in theatre and TV for over 20 years. As a teacher, I have introduced thousands of young people to the world of drama!
All of my lessons are (at present) offered online, one to one, using the virtual meeting app Zoom. So it doesn't matter where you are in the UK... I'm sure I could help you out!

There's lots of information on this site outlining all the different LAMDA exam syllabuses I teach, to help you
find the right choice for you or your young person. Any questions, please get in touch.

Most LAMDA exams consist of two pieces of work: one chosen from the LAMDA syllabus and one selected by the teacher and student. For Speaking in Public, LAMDA specifies particular topics and the speech is written collaboratively in the session. As the student works through the grade system, the speeches, poems, prose and topics become more challenging.
What can I offer?
I have been teaching LAMDA exams with one-on-one students for many years and am happy to offer tuition to students of any level. The sessions would start with the selection of pieces, followed by in-depth analysis and discussion of the text, rehearsal, all the way through to performance level and finally the exam.
My sessions are an hour in length, focussing on warm up, selecting/analysis and breaking down the performance material and staging it - usually followed by assisting answering The Knowledge questions which follow all performed pieces.
Once all the preparation work has been done, I will then enter the candidate for the exam at an examining event near you at the earliest possible date.
Tuition cost: £30 per hour (payable by bank transfer)
I look forward to meeting you on your first steps to better communication.
As the COVID-19 situation continues, we have sadly decided to postpone examinations scheduled during May. For those customers with learners entered during these months, we will either reschedule the exams or issue a Transfer Credit Voucher for the full value of the exam fee. This voucher can be used...
