🌊🇪🇺 UNISOC Active Project | 𝗚𝗢𝗩𝗔𝗤𝗨𝗔
Water scarcity, ecosystem degradation and overexploitation are placing growing pressure on European water systems. Climate change and structural economic shifts are accelerating these challenges.

GOVAQUA, funded by 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲, aims to accelerate the transition towards sustainable and equitable water use by redefining water governance in Europe.

For the first time, the project establishes clear criteria and indicators to assess what a sustainability transition in water governance truly means.

Through six Living Labs across Europe — including Axarquía (Spain) — GOVAQUA develops and validates innovative solutions in legislation, stakeholder participation, economic and financial instruments, and digital tools.

At the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼́𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗯𝗮, researchers contribute by analysing economic and financial mechanisms that can strengthen water system sustainability and support evidence-based policy design.

At UNISOC, we connect governance, economics and sustainability to help build a resilient water future.

This day commemorates the tragic events that took place in Sharpeville (South Africa) in 1960, when peaceful demonstrators against apartheid were killed. The massacre led to the adoption of the United Nations International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Since then, March 21 has served not only to honour those who suffer the daily consequences of racism, but also to reaffirm our collective obligation to combat discrimination in all its forms.

Racism is not limited to isolated acts — it is sustained by narratives, institutional structures and public discourse. The way societies speak about race, migration, religion or identity directly shapes perceptions, attitudes and social cohesion.

Any discourse that promotes ideas of superiority based on race, colour, language, religion, nationality or ethnic origin undermines the fundamental principle of equality.

Addressing racism requires more than symbolic condemnation. It demands sustained institutional commitment, evidence-based policies and active civic engagement to promote respect, coexistence and inclusion.

At UNISOC, we recognise the central role of research in understanding discrimination and supporting strategies that foster more just, inclusive and resilient societies.

Because combating discrimination is not a one-day effort — it is an ongoing responsibility.

🌾💻 Can digital technologies make agriculture more sustainable — economically, socially and environmentally?

CODECS, a 🇪🇺 Horizon Europe project involving 33 partners across Europe, works to maximise the co-benefits of agricultural digitalisation by building strong and inclusive digital ecosystems.

🌱 The project develops the concept of “𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻”, helping farmers understand and adopt digital tools as enablers of transformative change — not just technological upgrades.

📊 Through 21 Living Labs across Europe, CODECS analyses how digital technologies impact farm performance, rural communities and environmental sustainability, identifying synergies and trade-offs to support smarter policy design.

At the University of Córdoba, researchers contribute by coordinating the analysis of local digital ecosystems, generating evidence to improve future agricultural and digital policies.

🌱📊 How do environmental policies actually influence farmers’ decisions?

FARMPERFORM analyses the ecological transition of agriculture from a microeconomic perspective, evaluating how policies such as the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) shape farm-level behaviour and sustainability outcomes.

Through advanced behavioural modelling, the project simulates how farms respond to:

📜 Environmental regulations
💶 Financial incentives
🌿 Sustainability requirements

By understanding real decision-making processes, FARMPERFORM provides evidence to design more effective, realistic and economically viable agricultural policies.

📅 2023–2027
🏛 Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation & FEDER
👥 Led by researchers specialised in agricultural microeconomic modelling

At UNISOC, we connect economic science and public policy to support smarter and more sustainable agricultural transitions.

How can we design water policies that are both economically efficient and climate-resilient?

WADECO develops a 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼-𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 of the Guadalquivir River Basin, integrating 🌍 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 and 💶 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 to analyse how water management decisions interact with climate change scenarios.

By linking 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, the project creates a powerful decision-support tool to:

• Evaluate the impact of water policies
• Simulate climate change scenarios
• Optimise water allocation across competing uses

In Mediterranean regions increasingly exposed to 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, interdisciplinary science is not optional — it is essential.

At UNISOC, we generate evidence to support 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

🧠✨ 𝟮𝟰 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 | 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻
Today we celebrate Psychology Day in Spain in honour of 𝗝𝘂𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝗮𝗻, considered the patron of psychology since 1983.

A Renaissance physician, philosopher and writer, Huarte was one of the earliest thinkers to explore individual differences, human temperaments and the relationship between biology and behaviour. In 1575, his work Examen de Ingenios para las Ciencias laid intellectual foundations that would centuries later shape modern psychological and scientific thought.

He argued that education and knowledge should adapt to individual capacities — a remarkably forward-thinking idea rooted in humanism and empirical observation.

As Noam Chomsky recognised, Huarte anticipated key paths later taken by modern linguistic theory.

At UNISOC, we continue to explore behaviour, cognition and decision-making as essential pillars for understanding society and driving meaningful change.

🌍💧 UNISOC Project | REGEWATERFOOD

How do consumers perceive food grown with regenerated urban wastewater?

REGEWATERFOOD explores the acceptance of agri-food products produced through reclaimed water irrigation, analysing psychological and market barriers that may limit the transition towards circular water use in agriculture.

As water scarcity becomes an increasingly urgent global challenge, wastewater regeneration represents a key strategy for sustainable and climate-resilient food systems. However, technological feasibility alone is not enough — consumer trust and perception are essential.

By adopting a consumer behaviour perspective, this project contributes evidence to support more effective policies and communication strategies for circular economy practices in the agri-food sector.

✍️📚 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗦𝗢𝗖 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆

During 10 hours, we created a shared space of focus, silence and concentration so that each researcher could advance their ongoing work — PhD theses, journal articles, reports and projects.

Inspired by writing retreats and academic productivity practices widely implemented in the US and across Europe, this collective writing experience proved highly productive and motivating for everyone involved.

Sometimes, creating the right environment is all it takes to move research forward.
