🌊📊 UNISOC Active Project | WADECO

How can we design water policies that are both economically efficient and climate-resilient?

WADECO develops a 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼-𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 of the Guadalquivir River Basin, integrating 🌍 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 and 💶 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 to analyse how water management decisions interact with climate change scenarios.

By linking 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, the project creates a powerful decision-support tool to:

• Evaluate the impact of water policies
• Simulate climate change scenarios
• Optimise water allocation across competing uses

In Mediterranean regions increasingly exposed to 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, interdisciplinary science is not optional — it is essential.

At UNISOC, we generate evidence to support 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Today we celebrate Psychology Day in Spain in honour of 𝗝𝘂𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝗮𝗻, considered the patron of psychology since 1983.

A Renaissance physician, philosopher and writer, Huarte was one of the earliest thinkers to explore individual differences, human temperaments and the relationship between biology and behaviour. In 1575, his work Examen de Ingenios para las Ciencias laid intellectual foundations that would centuries later shape modern psychological and scientific thought.

He argued that education and knowledge should adapt to individual capacities — a remarkably forward-thinking idea rooted in humanism and empirical observation.

As Noam Chomsky recognised, Huarte anticipated key paths later taken by modern linguistic theory.

At UNISOC, we continue to explore behaviour, cognition and decision-making as essential pillars for understanding society and driving meaningful change.

🌍💧 UNISOC Project | REGEWATERFOOD

How do consumers perceive food grown with regenerated urban wastewater?

REGEWATERFOOD explores the acceptance of agri-food products produced through reclaimed water irrigation, analysing psychological and market barriers that may limit the transition towards circular water use in agriculture.

As water scarcity becomes an increasingly urgent global challenge, wastewater regeneration represents a key strategy for sustainable and climate-resilient food systems. However, technological feasibility alone is not enough — consumer trust and perception are essential.

By adopting a consumer behaviour perspective, this project contributes evidence to support more effective policies and communication strategies for circular economy practices in the agri-food sector.

During 10 hours, we created a shared space of focus, silence and concentration so that each researcher could advance their ongoing work — PhD theses, journal articles, reports and projects.

Inspired by writing retreats and academic productivity practices widely implemented in the US and across Europe, this collective writing experience proved highly productive and motivating for everyone involved.

Sometimes, creating the right environment is all it takes to move research forward.

🌱 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞

Environmental policies are often designed using surveys.
But what happens when respondents believe their answers will actually influence real decisions?

This study shows that 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲—the belief that responses may affect policy design—leads farmers to provide 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 when asked about adopting environmentally friendly practices.

When surveys are seen as irrelevant, compensation demands tend to be 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝.
When surveys feel credible and impactful, responses become closer to real-world decisions.

Understanding this mechanism helps reduce hypothetical bias and supports 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬.

Research that pays attention to how questions are perceived produces better evidence—and better outcomes for people and the environment.

📱 Cyberbullying doesn’t always look the same — and sometimes, it targets who you are.

A recent study with 601 adolescents explores stigma-based cyberbullying: online aggression rooted in differences such as appearance, identity, abilities or cultural background.

📝 Authors:
Antonio J. Rodríguez-Hidalgo, Victoria S. Camargo & Almudena Hurtado-Mellado
DOI: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-328X/15/5/646

What did the study reveal?

🔸 Appearance is the main trigger.
Most stigma-based attacks were linked to body image or physical abilities.

🔸 Victims see prejudice — aggressors rarely do.
A crucial perception gap that intensifies the problem.

🔸 Moral disengagement fuels aggression.
Justifying harm, minimizing responsibility or dehumanizing the victim strongly predicts stigma-based cyberaggression.

🔸 Decision-making skills matter.
Lower responsible decision-making is associated with higher victimization.

🔸 Gender patterns shift in stigma-based cases.
Girls show higher involvement, often tied to appearance-related social pressures.

🟣 Why this matters
Stigma-based cyberbullying impacts adolescents’ moral, emotional and social development.
Effective prevention must:
• Address prejudice explicitly
• Strengthen social and emotional competencies
• Reduce moral disengagement
• Integrate a gender-sensitive approach

Understanding how stigma shapes online violence is key to creating safer, more inclusive digital environments for young people.

🧠 Moral courage and defending victims of school bullying

Researchers from the Laboratory for the Study of Coexistence and Prevention of Violence (LAECOVI) at the University of Córdoba have analyzed how moral courage influences the way students defend victims of bullying.

The study, carried out by Paula García, Antonio Camacho, Rosario Ortega Ruiz, and Eva Romera, is based on data from more than 3,700 students aged 10 to 17.

Results show that moral courage is a deliberate cognitive–moral decision, strongly linked to prosocial defending behaviors such as comforting the victim, reporting to authority figures, and seeking constructive solutions. The findings also highlight important age and gender differences, underlining the need for developmentally sensitive prevention strategies.

Research like this helps us better understand how and why bystanders decide to act—and how moral courage can be strengthened in school settings.

🧠 World Depression Awareness Day | January 13

Depression is not a sign of weakness.
It is a complex mental health condition influenced by individual, social, and contextual factors.

Understanding how environments, social norms, inequality, and daily stressors shape mental well-being is essential to prevent stigma and promote effective support.

At UNISOC, we emphasize the importance of evidence-based research to better understand mental health challenges and to inform policies and interventions that truly improve people’s lives.

Talking about depression matters.
Listening matters.
Science matters.
