This is the last week of winter practice with all classes running.

In this week’s flow, we’ll focus on fluid, flowing movements, working with the spine and hips, alongside some gentle, watery qigong forms. Settling into a few longer holds to support natural mobility, encourage energy flow through the meridians, and blend meditation with posture.

Using the five elements to help find balance

Through yoga, we become more aware of how balance and imbalance feel within the body, mind, and spirit. The five element theory offers a helpful way to observe and understand these relationships within us.

In the mother/child (Shen) cycle, around the clock face. Metal supports Water, and Water supports Wood, reminding us that growth is continuous and interconnected. If one element is weakened, it affects those it nourishes.

In the control (Ko) cycle, across the clock face. Water is balanced by Earth and Fire is balanced by Water. Too much or too little of any element can lead to imbalance.

Ultimately, what we seek is balance among all five elements. Nothing is right or wrong, instead, we learn to notice what imbalance feels like and use the tools of our practice; posture, breath, and intention, to support or harmonise what’s needed.

Setting a Sankalpa

At this time of year, I like to introduce a Sankalpa at the beginning and/or end of our practice. A Sankalpa is a simple, positive intention that plants a seed in the subconscious, allowing change to unfold gently over time, making it especially suited to winter practice. It’s usually a short phrase, repeated in the same wording each time, acting like a stepping stone toward meaningful change.

In this practice, we continue with our watery theme; opening the joints, using gentle qigong to support the Kidney and Bladder channels, and finding stillness through longer holds. I hope this practice brings balance, inner peace, and a sense of connection to a deep inner source of energy.

The Water Element

At this time of year, our practice works with the water element. Water offers many teachings; it’s adaptable, powerful, and resilient, yet also gentle, still, and deeply calming. It reminds us of depth, mystery, and the wisdom of waiting until the right moment, like a bulb quietly gathering strength before emerging into the light.

As I write this on what’s often called “Blue Monday,” I hope to inspire you to join me on the mat as we explore inner strength, courage, and renewed enthusiasm for life. Working with the Kidney and Bladder channels can feel like igniting an inner pilot light, restoring vitality and helping us to thrive 🤗

“When the Kidney energy is revitalised, you’ll feel vibrant.”

Introducing the Bladder and Kidney meridian
The bladder meridian, the longest meridian with the most acupoints, runs down the back of the body, while the kidney meridian travels up the front. Together, they support the central channel, influencing the spine, nervous system, major glands, and our overall energy flow.

Through movement and posture, we strengthen these meridians by gently contracting and stretching along their pathways to circulate and tonify energy. Forward folds and backbends are especially effective in stimulating these channels.

This week’s practice begins to explore these powerful meridians, working to support our inner strength and vitality, leaving you feeling relaxed and restored. I hope you can join me, either in person, online or by a recording.

Happy New Year Everyone

As the new year begins, I’m navigating quite a few changes, drawing on the words in the image above, taken while hill walking in Tenerife just before Christmas. They come from the water element and reflect the qualities of winter, a time to rest, reflect, and find stillness, while also cultivating resilience, courage, and adaptability.

Step Onto Your Mat With Me This Week

I’d love you to join me for one last practice of the year as we create a little stillness in the midst of the seasonal busyness.

In flow, we’ll move through a simple asymmetrical/symmetrical sequence, focusing on one side of the body at a time, mainly hips and spine, to reset your energy and calm your nervous system. A chance to slow down, listen inward and make time for you.

In yin, we’ll work with the Conception and Governing Vessels, using key acupoints along the front and back of the body, accessed through gentle, supported postures.

Come fill your cup before the festivities begin.

Yang to Yin / Flow to Slow / Sky to Earth / Activity to Stillness

This time of year always brings a rush of busyness, so much to do, buy, organise and prepare, even though our bodies are quietly asking for rest.

In this week’s flow classes, we’ll move slowly, free the joints, and enjoy some lingering, juicy holds.
In Thursday’s Yin class, we’ll gently descend from sky to earth, helping the body and mind ease into winter’s quieter energy.

I know I need this shift and I hope it supports you too.

If the “silly season” is stressing you out, stepping onto your mat might be exactly what your nervous system needs.

Relaxing Along the Line of Tension

We’ve been adding a few longer-held, yin-style postures into our flow classes. These shapes can feel challenging, but holding them helps quiet an overactive mind, especially helpful at this busy time of year as we shift toward winter’s slower, yin energy.

In each pose, try to relax and let go, along the line of tension you feel in the body. This gentle focus helps release layers of tightness, encourages deeper stillness, and supports the body unravelling around an area of holding. Yin postures also stimulate key meridian lines, all helping to create more space and freedom physically, and calmness mentally.

Join me on the mat this week, or practice online from home, and feel the benefits for yourself. 🧘‍♀️✨

The Martini Pose 🍸
We’re ending our practice with one of my favourite relaxation poses, lovingly nicknamed the martini pose because it feels like that first blissful sip after a long day!

Viparita Karani (legs on a chair or up the wall) helps:
• relax tired legs
• boost circulation + lymph flow
• release back tension
• support a full, easy exhale
• deeply calm the whole system 🥰

Join me this week to enjoy this soothing finish to our Autumn practice.

Benefits of Good Breathing

Our lungs absorb oxygen from the air and deliver it to the bloodstream, nourishing every cell. In return, carbon dioxide is carried back to the lungs and released when we exhale.

The diaphragm, our main breathing muscle, sits below the lungs and works with the intercostal muscles. Deep breathing moves the diaphragm downward, gently massaging the heart and abdominal organs, improving circulation and energy flow.

In challenging times, returning to the steady rhythm of the breath can restore calm and balance.

Join me on the mat this week and experience the benefits for yourself.
