People often say, just do you. But if you donât actually know who you are, what you want, what energizes you, and what drains you, how can you possibly do that?
Itâs really hard to be yourself if you donât know yourself. It becomes difficult to build a life that fits when you donât fully understand yourself.
Back when I was still studying, I never understood how my friends could party for days, have long lunches, talk for hours, and still be up for more. I loved being with them. But a fully booked social calendar made me feel tired and overwhelmed.
I looked at what others did, what was considered normal to like or dislike, and I had no idea how to tune in with my own wants and needs. So I assumed something was wrong with me. I kept saying yes, kept overcommitting, doing all the things, but quietly wondering why it left me so drained. Later I realized Iâm an introvert.
There was never anything wrong with me. I just need alone time to recharge. And when I donât get that time, I hit total exhaustion. Looking back, I think I spent half my student life walking around with a dead battery, wondering why I couldnât keep up.
After a busy weekend, I now know I need time to recover. That doesnât mean I can simply disappear. I still have to work, take care of the kids, and show up for life. So no, itâs not about two long spa days. But I do create small pockets of space wherever I can. Less noise. More routine. Good sleep. And slowly, the brain fog I always feel after intense socializing starts to lift.
Now I know I canât look at someone elseâs life and decide how to live mine. What gives them energy might completely drain me. Even as a psychologist, I donât believe in giving copy-paste advice. What works for me might not work for you. Because the truth is, no one else can tell you how to live your life. No one else can define what your dream life looks like. Not your friends. Not social media. Not even me. That is something only you can figure out. And that is exactly why I wrote my book. Itâs not a manual telling you how to live your life. Itâs a guide to help you discover who you really are, so you can create a life that feels true to you. And the funny thing is, once you start living from that place, everything begins to fall into place â€ïž
