The Difference Between a “Salus” and Coz’s Holistic Maternity Care

In Spain, a “Salus” traditionally focuses on the physical care of the newborn — feeding, changing, settling, and supporting parents in practical baby care during the early weeks. Their main role is to ensure that the baby’s basic needs are met, often providing valuable night support so parents can rest. The approach is largely task-oriented and centred around the baby’s routine, comfort, and wellbeing.

My role as a Maternity Carer goes beyond this. While I provide the same expert newborn care that a Salus would, my approach is holistic and family-centred, recognising that a baby’s wellbeing is deeply connected to the emotional and mental health of the whole family.

My care focuses not just on what the baby needs, but also on how the parents feel. I offer gentle guidance that respects each family’s values, rhythms, and emotional needs — creating an atmosphere of calm, confidence, and connection.

My support includes:
• Emotional check-ins and compassionate listening for both parents.
• Gentle encouragement through the ups and downs of early parenthood.
• Practical tools for rest, recovery, and mental wellbeing.
• Flexible routines that prioritise bonding over rigid schedules.
• A nurturing presence that supports the whole household, not just the baby.

In essence, while a Salus focuses on the baby’s care, My maternity care embraces the whole family’s wellbeing — balancing practical support with emotional understanding to help everyone feel settled, confident, and cared for.

Babies (and adults) wake at night.

Before detachment, must first come attachment. Before independence, must first come dependence.

A huge amount of parenting advice for 0-5 year olds focuses on fostering independence. This independence is supposed to come when they are encouraged to be away from parents; be that on play dates, in groups and activities, at nursery and preschool and in their own rooms at night (all night).

Only this isn’t how independence happens. You cannot teach (or force) a child to be independent if they are not ready to be so.

Independence implies that the child is done with being dependent. It implies that they are ready to leave the safe ‘hold’ of their parents. That they have the confidence and understanding of the world to no longer have any fear of what it may hold. .

Independence is a developmental milestone that is built firmly on the foundations and security that dependence brings. Without this groundwork, any seeming independence is fragile and superficial at best.

No young child can ever truly be independent, even the most seemingly independent ones. It is normal and necessary for them to still be dependent upon us. The best thing we can do is to allow this dependence and equally allow their growing independence (when they are ready). By neither refusing, preventing, or forcing a connection with ourselves, we encourage true independence – then and only then.

✨ Caring for twins ✨

When you’ve got two little ones at the same time, the logistics can feel like a puzzle! From holding and feeding both babies safely, to working out how to soothe them when they need you at once—it’s a lot to juggle.

That’s where I come in 💛 As a maternity carer, I help parents of twins with the practical side of things:
👶 Supporting tandem feeding (whether breast, bottle, or mixed)
🍼 Showing safe ways to hold, carry, or wear both babies (yes, twin carriers exist!)
💤 Helping with gentle routines so parents can actually rest
🧩 Taking the overwhelm out of “two at once” and making it feel manageable

Twins bring double the joy—and sometimes double the chaos! With the right support, you can focus more on the cuddles and less on the stress. 🌙✨
