𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔?
Frequently, parents and careers have to deal with disruptive and challenging behaviours. They are keen on adressing everything at once but it is important to set priorities and often look at pivotal behaviours that will boost other learning areas for the child.
We wanted to share this extract from the manual Applied Behaviour Analysis, Chapter 3. Cooper, J. et al."𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘉𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴."
"Target behaviours should not be selected for the primary benefit of others (e.g. "Be still, be quiet...") or because they pique the interest of someone in a position to change behaviours...
..He wanted to teach cursive writing to a ... child (who) could not read (except his name), print or even reliably identify all the letters of the alphabet. I asked "Who decided that was the problem to work on next?" (Hawkins, 1975, p.195)
A central question must always be "𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒆𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏´𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆?"
It is always important to keep this in mind when looking at what do we want from an intervention on the child, he should always be the priority before our desires.
Whising you a great weekend 😉
