Moving Mental Health Conversations Into the Community

To create a world where people are aware of the importance of mental health, discussions need to be a constant occurrence.

However, discussions on mental health should take place carefully to prevent the spread of misinformation. These conversations should be led by professionals, such as psychiatrists and psychologists. Furthermore, individuals with lived experience should have the opportunity to share their stories.

These discussions will go a long way in helping the community understand the importance of prioritizing mental health and fighting stigma.

It is not realistic to believe that all the work of treating mental health issues can be done in an outpatient department (OPD). While mental health professionals can treat patients and provide psychoeducation in a clinical setting, that hardly scratches the surface of what is needed to bring about radical change.

When continuous discussions take place, harmful societal beliefs begin to fade away, and discrimination and harmful stereotypes can be addressed. To care for the mind properly, we must also address how we think. Fostering an environment where there is a positive attitude toward mental health is vital.

What is your relationship with social media like?

Many people these days have a strong link with social media. This is because it is right there on their phone accessible at any time of the day. This, however, can lead to several types of unhealthy behaviors.

One of the bad habits people do is checking their phone the moment they wake up. They start their day with notifications and messages.

The other thing is people tend to end their day by checking their phones.

This may sound like rest but it is not. Passively scrolling through social media can negatively affect mood, concentration and sleep.

Before going on a ‘doom scroll’ pause and think if you are sure you want to pick up the phone and stare at that screen.
