Africa stands at a defining moment.

With our population projected to reach 1.7 billion by 2030, digital transformation is no longer optional. It is central to achieving Universal Health Coverage, strengthening epidemic preparedness, and advancing Africa’s Health Security and Sovereignty.

In our latest publication in the Journal of Public Health in Africa, my Africa CDC colleagues and I outline five priorities to move from fragmented pilots to scalable, interoperable digital public health systems.

The future of public health in Africa must be connected, trusted, and built for scale.

Three years at Africa CDC have reinforced a lesson I learned early in my career.

As a young doctor in Kahemba, rural , serving 250,000 people, I saw how fragile systems cost lives. Expanding access to care requires investing in strong public health infrastructure that reaches everyone.

In my conversation with Devex, I reflect on building resilient systems that protect communities across Africa.

Pleased to welcome H.E. Mr. Innocent Eugene Shiyo, Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to Ethiopia.

We discussed strengthening collaboration to advance Africa’s health security and health sovereignty, including more resilient primary health care for women and children. We also reflected on the appointment of H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan as African Union Champion for Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health, an important step to accelerate progress across Africa.

Strong country leadership and partnerships are essential to translate commitments into measurable impact.

------
Heureux d’accueillir S.E.

Lifting the mpox Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) was an important milestone. Sustaining progress now depends on continued access to vaccines.

In a new paper with Africa CDC and World Health Organization (WHO) colleagues, we estimate 6.4 million doses are needed to interrupt transmission. By January 2026, 5.1 million had been shipped — important progress, but still not enough to achieve sustained control.

Equity must be built into access. The Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS) Agenda is our pathway from scarcity to security: predictable supply, stronger regional manufacturing, and pooled procurement that delivers at scale.

I was pleased to join colleagues at opening of the High-Level Meeting and Technical Workshop on Equitable Access to and Local Manufacturing of Health Products in Africa, hosted by the World Bank Group and the African Union.

Strengthening local manufacturing of health products is fundamental to our health security, economic resilience, and sovereignty, Africa must move decisively from rhetoric to action.

In collaboration with AU institutions, African Medicines Agency (AMA), African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, and AUDA NEPAD, we are determined to unlock the persistent bottlenecks constraining manufacturing across the continent. Africa must transition from dependency to production; from importing solutions to building them.

We remain committed to working closely with the World Bank Group and partners to achieve the target of manufacturing 60% of Africa’s health products locally by 2040.

-------

I welcomed Dr. Abraham Korir Sing'Oei, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Kenya, together with H.E. Éléonore Caroit, France’s Minister Delegate for Francophonie, International Partnerships, and French Nationals Abroad, to Africa CDC to discuss strategic cooperation in support of Africa’s health security and sovereignty.

With the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi and the One Health Summit in France ahead, we explored how to better align global partnerships with African priorities, including local manufacturing and pooled procurement, sustainable health financing, and digital transformation.

Africa’s health agenda must be shaped in Africa and delivered at scale. Africa CDC will continue working with African Union Member States and partners to translate political commitment into measurable results.

------

Every hour, nearly 20 women in Africa die in childbirth. This is unacceptable, and preventable. No woman should die giving life.

On the margins of the 39th African Union Summit, I joined leaders and partners for a High-Level Forum to launch an initiative on maternal health and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

To translate this initiative into lives saved, we must strengthen the systems that serve women every day. Under AHSS, that means stronger primary health care, a supported health workforce (including community health workers), reliable access to life-saving maternal health commodities, and better data for accountability.

Now is the time to turn commitments into measurable results.

-----
