Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa-CARMMA

Africa Cares: No woman should die while giving life! The Campaign was launched in May 2009 within the context of the Maputo Plan of Action (MPoA).

Although maternal and child health indicators are improving globally, women and children continue to die from preventable or treatable causes. The Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA ) was initiated by the African Union Commission to address the challenges of maternal mortality in African countries. The MPoA underscores the need to reduce maternal mortality and achieve progress in the attainment of the MDGs.

The African Union through the Africa CDC has organized a 4 day high-level expert panel meeting from 26-29 September with the aim of & the Continental Framework for where CARMMA is is taking part & contributing to the scope of maternal and child mortality

Bakari Nyari the CARMMA Africa M & E Expert presented the findings from the evaluation of CARMMA (2009 - 2019) as well as priorities of CARMMA Plus emphasizing the need to make the “P” (Perinatal deaths) visible within the Maternal Death and Perinatal Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) by ensuring that perinatal deaths receive attention equal to that of maternal deaths during review and response.
