Dr. Germay is a distinguished Tigrayan physician committed to serving his people
Dr. Girmay Hagos grew up facing hardships like any other Tigrayan. In an era when being an educated citizen was a rare privilege, he was among the few Tigrayans who, as outstanding students, traveled to Cuba on scholarship and studied medicine — one of those who can be counted on one’s fingers.

Before returning home, he completed his specialization and subspecialization in surgery.

In the development and expansion of healthcare services in Tigray, particularly at Lemlem Karl Hospital in Maychew, Mekelle Hospital, and Ayder Referral Hospital, from the very beginning of their establishment, he was one of the pioneering professionals who played a lion’s share in delivering dedicated and rigorous service. For over 30 years, he served without interruption in the extremely challenging surgical specialty — a field that demands intense focus, where a patient’s life can slip away in the blink of an eye and requires the highest level of care and precision.

He was a true son of his country and his people, an excellent student and physician — calm, humble, efficient, compassionate, brave, one who works without seeking praise, who demonstrated his love for his profession through action, who produced many who are like him, and whose name is engraved in the hearts of countless Tigrayans. He is a true heroic doctor.

It is for this reason that his former students and his professional colleagues organized this honor and tribute ceremony to celebrate him today.

May it be our culture to give honor to whom honor is due.
