URGENT HEALTH ALERT:
Marburg Virus Confirmed in Ethiopia
Officials from Ethiopia's Ministry of Health have announced the diagnosis of a case of Marburg virus disease (MVD) at Jinka Hospital in Ethiopia. Marburg is a severe viral hemorrhagic fever that can very often result in death.
What do you need to know:
Direct contact with the infected person's blood, secretions, or bodily fluids is the only way of transmission.
Symptoms are: Sudden high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding.
This is a very grave situation, but no good will come from panicking. Take note of these situations to keep safe:
1. Observing very good hygiene:
Washing the hands often with soap and water is recommended.
2. Contact with blood or body fluids of sick people should not take place.
3. Handling or consuming bushmeat is to be avoided.
4. In case you or someone else develops sudden fever along with other symptoms, you are to SEEK MEDICAL CARE IMMEDIATELY. Do not treat yourself.
