- Phagocytosis is a process by which certain cells, known as phagocytes, engulf and digest foreign particles, cellular debris, or microorganisms.

- This process is essential for the immune system, helping to protect the body from infections & cleaning up damaged tissues.

- The steps:-

1. Recognition: The phagocyte detects a foreign particle through specific receptors on its membrane.

2. Engulfment: The phagocyte's membrane deforms to surround the particle, enclosing it in a vesicle called a phagosome.

3. Digestion: The phagosome then fuses with lysosomes, which contain digestive enzymes, forming a phagolysosome where the particle is broken down.

4. Excretion: The indigestible residues are expelled from the cell.

Why do Bacteria Stain Differently?
stain either Gram-positive or Gram-negative on the basis of differences in their cell wall composition
positives have a thick peptidoglycan layer & large amounts of teichoic acids
negatives have a thin peptidoglycan layer & an outer membrane composed of a lipid bilayer
outer membrane of Gram-negative organisms is damaged by the decolorizer (organic solvents)
