Team Janey Kent Challenge Fund Fergal Mullen will take on three challenges with the goal of raising at lease €100,000 for Dana Farber Boston, Irish Cancer Society, and SONGE Geneva.

2013 was not a good year in the Kent-Mullen household as the "Big C" entered our life in a rude and unexpected fashion. 2014 is off to a great start and we have put 2013 behind us already. This time last year, my Janey underwent 2 operations to remove an aggressive cancerous breast tumor. Following the operations, Janey endured a brutal chemo treatment for sixteen weeks followed by radio therapy for five weeks. She was at war with this thing for most of the year, she stared it down, and prevailed. That's my girl!! I am taking on three big challenges in honour of Janey and as a token of my love, admiration, and gratitude for all that we have together, especially our lovely kids Jenna, James, Hugo and Jack who were absolute little heroes throughout the difficult periods in 2013. First, I will run the Boston Marathon on April 21 2013 with Dana Farber. I will be accompanied by six friends (Thomas Hickey, Niall Kearns, Willy Walker, Tony Zappala, Frederic Berney and Giles Peterhans) all running for Team Janey under the DFMC banner. Nine days later, I will take on my second challenge, the formidable Patrouille des Glaciers www.pdg.ch, skinning / touring from Zermatt to Verbier over 53KM with +4,100M of climbing and -4,000 of decent. I hope to accomplish this enormous challenge with my good friend from Brown and HBS, Oliver Gardey. Thank you Oliver for the inspiration! We will be accompanied by Nico Poncet who is a Chamonix Mountain Guide. Again, I will be participating under the Team Janey banner. Then in July, I will complete the Etape de Tour de France from Pau to Hautacam which includes the famous Col du Tourmalet. Depending on her strength and fitness, Janey may join me in this challenge. My objective is to raise at least €100,00 for three cancer focused research and treatment groups. First, Dana Farber in Boston who need no introduction. Thank you to my old friends Jan Ross and Jack Fultz for facilitating my team's participation, we won't let you down. Second, I will direct one-third of the funds raised to SONGE www.songe.ch in Geneva which is the breast cancer expert network group to which Eric Megevan (Janey's surgeon), Anne Hugli (Janey's Oncologist) and Bernard Ody (Janey's Radiologist) belong. Thank you guys for the phenomenal care you delivered, world-class and so warm, not much more I can say. Finally, one-third of the funds will go to the Irish Cancer Society www.cancer.ie. Both Janey and I were very moved by the completely selfless and brave actions of Majella O' Donnell when she shaved her head on national TV the night before her chemo was to begin last year. It was very moving and we would like to add to the enormous funds she raised that evening with our own small contribution from this fundraising initiative. We will get the ball rolling on the €100,000 objective with €33,000 of our own funds and look forward to your support and encouragement in the coming months. Please excuse my intrusions in the coming months as I put a sharp focus on this objective. I hope you won't find my emails and updates to bothersome. Thank you to all our family and friends for the enormous support last year. We would not have made it without you. You can support the Janey Kent Mullen Challenge Fund using the following channels:

Two years ago I failed to complete the Patrouille des Glaciers crashing out at Arolla after tearing my calf muscle on the Col de Bertol. The PDG was the second of three challenges I had set in a fundraise for three breast cancer treatment focused organizations, SONGe in Geneva, Dana Farber in Boston and the Irish Cancer Society. The fundraise was extraordinarily successful thanks to the generosity of our family and friends. We are forever grateful for the contributions which totaled over $200,000. Challenge 1, the Boston Marathon, and challenge 3, the Etape de Tour de France went well but I felt like a loser for not having completed challenge 2, the PDG so that had to be put right. I'm not one to leave a job undone. With the help of my close friends Christian Bedat and Alexis Sautereau we completed the mythical course last Wednesday morning in 11hrs and 42mins. We could not have done it without the support of our darling wives and kids. The experience was incomparable to any sporting event I have ever experienced and I could not begin to describe how elated we were on completion. As last time with Oliver Gardey and Nico Poncet, the team was strong and totally committed but this time, the little Irish guy managed to avoid having an accident. Thank you all for your support and kind words. Thank you Oliver Gardey and Nico Poncet for the great moments preparing for and during PDG 2014. Thank you Christian Bedat and Alexis Sautereau for everything. It was more than fun training for and completing the PDG 2016 with you guys. Christian, your words ring true - three bodies, one soul makes a fabulous team. I will close down this page now that each of the challenges is complete.

CHALLENGE 3, COMPLETE! I feel fortunate to have made it thru the Etape on Sunday 20th August and that has nothing to do with fitness or preparation. The weather was atrocious and apparently only 4,500 out of more than 10,000 starters finished. I saw some unpleasant crashes due to the cold and wet conditions. The temperature at the top of Tourmalet at 2,100M was only 3c. So this brings the three challenges to a close and for now, I am done. We enjoyed a nice week in San Sebastian en famille. Between the family surfing lessons and fabulous food, I killed all the fitness training quickly. I will close the books on the fundraise at the end of August and will send a final update on the tally. In the interim, I am delighted to say that we have topped the €150K mark on behalf of SONGE, Dana Farber (Boston) and The Irish Cancer Society. We don't know how to thank you all for your kindness, support, and generosity other than by saying a heartfelt thank you!!

I sent Janey a video message from the Etape finish line at the top of Hautacam. My message was short and simple and went something like…..I made it, I am tired and cold but I would do it all again and again and again - the marathon, the PDG, and the Etape - to keep you well. Love you my darling Janey.

Kiddos, thanks for all the support. You are the best! Jenna, James, Hugo, and Jack and of course Janey, I send you huge big family hug and all my love.

Thanks to all,

Fergal.

CHALLENGE 2, NOT COMPLETE......YET

Dear Friends, Dear Supporters, Challenge 2, La Patrouille des Glaciers (La PDG) did not go to plan. I had to drop at the half-way mark in Arolla after shredding my left calf muscle at the Col de Bertol at 3,600M. It's a terrible shame as everything was going to plan. We crested the Tete Blanche glacier and made the traverse to Col de Bertol without stress. Oliver, Nico, and I were feeling great. We removed the rope at Col de Bertol, removed the touring skins, and locked into our boots and skis for the descent to Arolla. Just 20M over the ledge, I jammed my left ski into the snow bank on a narrow ridge path which caused me to fall forward and then back and in an attempt to stay upright, I pulled myself forward again and heard my calf muscle rip. It was not a nice sound;-( We discussed as a team what to do next. The sensible thing to do would have been to climb back up 20M to the medical tent at the Col but I thought I could ignore the pain and maybe complete the course. We descended the -2000M over 10KM distance to Arolla. This is without doubt the most painful thing I have ever done. I screamed like a baby at times. But we made it! Arolla, which is the half-way mark, was the end of the line for me. After a medical review, it was clear that I was out but the team continued and I am delighted to report that Oliver Gardey and Nico Poncet completed the PDG in the planned time. I managed to get from Arolla to Verbier with the help of my old friend Alexis Sautereau who was in Arolla to support Christian Bedat. Janey and I were at the finish with Carol Gardey to greet Oliver and Nico as they came over the line. So Challenge 2 remains incomplete. It will be two years before I can repeat the challenge as the event only takes place every two years. I will leave this page up until the challenge is complete. In the meantime, I will try to heal the 5CM tear in my calf muscle in time to complete Challenge 3, the Etape de Tour de France.

I am hoping that you will take into consideration the fact that we completed the full course during team training in early in April. So I have done 1.5X the PDG in the past four weeks with the Boston Marathon in between. If that counts for something, I won't have to send too many campaign contribution refund checks;-)

Thank you all, and thank you Janey for allowing me to take on this challenge. I am honoured to have participated in the PDG with my old and close friend Oliver Gardey alongside Nico Poncet, our guide, who has become a close friend in recent months That's the spirit of the PDG. We loved every moment of it! Switzerland has every right to be as proud of this event as it is. I will be back, hopefully with Oliver and Nico!! Onwards and upwards, Team Janey, otherwise known as The Soho Ramblers.

Finished challenge 1 today. The Boston marathon. Was a little ambitious on pace during first half (1:27 ) and finished in 3:17 apparently. Have not checked yet. It was so much fun. Picture is Team Janey on the line, Tony Zappala, me, Frederic Berney, Gilles Peterhans, and Niall Kearns. Thank you everyone for the fabulous support along the route. Thank you my darling Janey for the big hug en route to the finish line. Love to all.

Big training weekend this weekend! 4am start Saturday from Zermatt to Arolla and 4am again Sunday from Arolla to verbier. Trick now is to complete this beast of a course in one stage at the end of April. Feeling fit and ready, but it is long and tough in difficult snow conditions. Thanks all for the massive support for our campaign. Fergal and Janey.

This speaks for itself! The Irish Cancer Society is a fabulous organisation that deserves all the support we can give them. Janey and I hope that this Daffodil Day is a very special one for all involved and that the fundraising goals are exceeded.
Good luck to all the team there. Fergal & Janey, Jenna, James, Hugo, and Jack cheering on from Geneva, Switzerland.

Nationwide visits the town of Drogheda which has turned the town yellow for Daffodil day. We see the preparations for one of Ireland's largest fundraising days, as we join the volunteers as they prepare for the Irish cancer society's Daffodil day.
