Tendre pensées a mon père. Always in my heart. Love u dad.

How the Indian Yoga entered Europe.

This year France hosted Olympic sports meet. At the same time a young Indian couple Shrimati Bhavana Pradumna and her husband Pradyumna founders, directors of Indian Conservatory in Paris received a felicitation letter from our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for their active curating cultural events at Fan-Zone during the 2024 …. Further the Prime Minister felicitates the couple “It is heartening to note that apart from artistic and cultural extravaganza ICParis also features Yoga sessions”.
This last statement made me to ponder over the question: Although many “Yoga specialists” run Yoga classes not only in India but also abroad. But how many of them know the history of “How our India Yoga entered Europe, who was the first person dared to speak and teach Yoga here.”
My mind went back to 1977 and then to 1947. In 1977 my elder brother Dr. Wasant Kawali, Drama producer, AIR Bangalore, also good exponent of Hindistani classical vocal music was with us in Paris. He was in admiration of Mahesha Ghatradiyal, a Yoga teacher in Paris, as also Maecenas for artists. Mahesh had profusely remunerated my brother’s concert. So, my brother was telling my husband Pierre-Sylvain. “Mahesha and I we were classmates in the Karnatak College, Dharwar. He was from a very poor family like many students during the British rule in India. But luck would have it Mahesha was a talented sportsman and very good runner. In 1947 he was selected for the University Olympics as a runner. Mahesh was to leave for France but no money. India was under the British clutches. So, the Principal of the Karnatak College called all the students for a meeting and said “It is a great honour for our college and the city that our student Mahesh Ghatradiyal is selected as runner for the Olympic games. No doubt he is a good runner, but he cannot run up to Paris. He has to fly. He needs money for the air ticket. He can buy his air ticket if each one of us contributes Eight annas (8 Anna=50 paises, half a rupees)”. Each one of us paid 8 annas. That is how Mahesh came to Paris.
To this my husband Pierre-Sylvain added: “In 1947 that was the time when two persons were making frantic efforts to know ‘What is Yoga and who can teach it?’. They came to know that Mahesha had his primary and secondary school education in the Shivayoga Mandir at Badami, Karnataka where Yoga is compulsory and Mahesha is very good at it. They both met him and one of them even organized his Yoga “show” in the Amphitheatre of the prestigious Sorbonne University. Impressed by his performance they advised him to open a “Yoga center” in Paris. Thus, Paris public learnt, got educated about our Indian YOGA as early as in 1947.
Of the two persons who encouraged Mahesha to teach Yoga in Paris one was Dr. Dolto and the other Dr. Prof. Jean Filliozat. Dr. Dolto was a Psychiatrist Pediatric. She had read somewhere that ‘Yoga helps to recover fast the mentally re****ed children or having psychic problems. So, she was eager to meet a “Yoga” knowing person. Ophthalmologist Doctor Jean Filliozat had also studied Ayurveda. He knew that recovery is faster if the patient practices Yoga along with Ayurvedic medicines. So, he was looking for a person to tell him what Yoga is. (Same Doctor Prof. Jean Filliozat is also credited to be the Founder Director of French Institute in Pondicherry in 1955. He was a renowned Indologist of international repute.)
Owing to the interest of these two persons a young sportive Mahesha Ghatradiyal could start Yoga classes in Paris as early as in 1949-1950. Isn’t it the duty of founders of the IC in Paris to remember Mahesha and render homage to him before beginning the activities of Yoga?
More than a decade ago Mahesh passed away. At least now should we not remember him and realise the imprtance of his service? I hope someone will read this small note and realise the supreme importance of Mahesha’s service, inform the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Modi to remember this unsung Hero and Honor him with “Bharataratna” title posthumous? and Karnataka with Karnataka Ratna?
How true is the saying of King Krishnadevaraya (1510-1530 CE) the Emperor of Karnataka Samrajya :
“What Great things could be effected by one GOOD MAN”.

More than a decade ago on 21st August Mahesha left this world to the other. Mahesha demonstrating Yoga in the Amphithetre of Sorbonne, Paris. THIS WAS the fIRST show of Yoga in Paris, France
