Pregnant in France - When should I inform my employer?

In France, there is no obligation to inform your employer of your pregnancy. However, you must notify your employer that you are going on maternity leave before the start of your leave.

Generally, women inform their employers as a courtesy but also in order to benefit from the protective status of the pregnant woman.

It’s recommended to wait at least three months before informing your employer of your pregnancy because the risk of miscarriage is highest during the first trimester.

You can inform your employer orally or in writing.
The most appropriate way is to make an appointment with your manager to tell her/him the news directly. It is also useful to make an appointment with human resources as they will be handling the paperwork for the maternity leave.

Pregnancy is a special time, don't let work overtake you and take care of yourself!

What is a sage-femme? 🌸

This is a word you will hear a lot throughout your pregnancy in France!

Indeed, “sage-femme” is the french word for midwife.

The midwife is a medical professional specialised in pregnancy and birth. She takes care of the medical follow-up of normal pregnancies. The midwife may also provide birth preparation classes and postnatal support.

In France the medical follow-up of your pregnancy can be done by a gynaecologist, a midwife or a general practitioner.

Which health care professional did you choose? Have you found your midwife?

August is usually the month when we slow down. That’s exactly what we need to do during pregnancy and not only in summer! 🌞

When you are pregnant, you have a thousand things to do and prepare. Besides the administrative formalities, you have to prepare the baby's stuff and finish your work files in addition to the usual daily tasks.

The key to getting everything done without burning out is moderation! Medical examinations, childbirth preparation courses, purchases to prepare for the baby's arrival, administrative formalities, etc.All these activities can be done as long as they do not become a source of stress.

For that follow the rule of “one”:

🍒 Once a month, a medical examination (or more depending on the case).

🍒 Once a week, an activity to relax and prepare for the birth: swimming pool, prenatal yoga, hypnobirthing, massage, prenatal singing, etc.

🍒 On weekends, a little shopping to choose the baby's things or working with the dad to prepare the baby's room.

🍒 From time to time, social obligations but don't feel obliged to accept them all.

To avoid forced rest, adjust your pace from the beginning of your pregnancy!
