You never know what's around the corner.

We tend to assume that close relatives will automatically be allowed to make decisions on our behalf if something happens to us, but this isn’t true.

Today, April 22nd 2026 is the first UK wide Power of Attorney Day.

Heard of power of attorney but think it's something for when you get older?

Power of attorney isn’t about age; it’s about preparation.

It’s for all adults wanting someone they trust to make decisions on their behalf if they become ill, injured, or unable to manage (on a temporary basis or in the long term).

The first ever UK wide Power of Attorney day will be on the 22nd April 2026.

Being next of kin doesn’t automatically give you a say

We often assume that close relatives can automatically make decisions on our behalf if something happens to us, but this isn’t true.

Being ‘next of kin’ does not have the same legal decision-making ability as power of attorney.

The first ever UK wide Power of Attorney day will be on the 22nd April 2026.

Carers Scotland and Standard Life have joined forces to launch the first ever UK-wide Power of Attorney Day which will take place on Wednesday 22 April 2026. The initiative aims to raise awareness and understanding of powers of attorney and to encourage more people to put them in place.
A power of attorney is a legal document that can ensure a person’s wishes are respected, should they be in a position where they are no longer able to express this directly. For carers, having power of attorney in place can provide clarity and avoid stressful decision-making during difficult emergency situations.
In Scotland, a Power of Attorney (PoA) allows an individual to appoint a trusted person to make decisions on their behalf. Anyone aged 16 or over can set up a Power of Attorney, but it must be done while they still have mental capacity to make their own decisions.
