Christmas can be a great time of the year, but it’s also important to remember that it can be hard for some and can affect mental health in different ways. Many people feel pressure to have the ‘perfect’ Christmas lead to stress, others struggle to get through the holidays because everyone else feels happy when they’re not.

There are many reasons that Christmas can be a difficult time for someone whether this is financial stress, loneliness, celebrating when loved ones are missing, having to spend time with people you have difficult relationships with, or the support services you rely on being disrupted over the festive period.

It’s important to have healthy coping methods to help you through this period, especially if you feel like it is starting to negatively affect your mental health. Try to avoid comparing your Christmas to others and prioritise what is best for your wellbeing, don’t feel like you have to bottle things up to please other people. It can help to open up to someone you trust about how you’re feeling or get in touch with 24/7 helplines such as Samaritans (call 116 123) or Shout (text SHOUT to 85258.)

We always say that it’s ok to not be ok – this doesn’t change just because it’s Christmas. If you find this time of year difficult and want to talk about it, try coming along to our group. Reminder that our Kingswells group meets tonight at 6:30pm.

Recognizing when we’re emotionally dysregulated is a game‑changer. 🌱 It lets us hit pause, breathe, and choose a healthier response instead of reacting on autopilot. Pair that awareness with therapy, and you gain a safe space to unpack triggers, learn coping tools, and build lasting resilience. Together they sharpen mental clarity, deepen relationships, and empower you to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence. 📸

Our inner voice often repeats the stories we heard in childhood—stories that can feel like criticism, even when they’re just echoes of past experiences. 🌱

🔹 Safety First: In therapy we create a space where you can truly feel safe, free from those old, unhelpful narratives.
🔹 Notice the Echo: When a thought like “they’re angry with me” pops up, pause and ask: Is this really what’s happening now, or a lingering echo from my past?
🔹 Choose Release: Recognising the difference gives you permission to let go, breathe, and respond from the present moment instead of reacting to a phantom feeling.

💬 If you notice these echoes showing up, know you’re not alone. Together we can untangle them, rebuild a compassionate inner dialogue, and move toward genuine peace.

Im back with a wee bit more information about Transactional Analysis:

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychological framework developed by Canadian-born psychiatrist Eric Berne in the 1950s. It provides a method for understanding human behaviour and improving communication by analysing social interactions, termed "transactions."

At the core of TA is the concept of "ego states," which are distinct modes of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Berne identified three primary ego states:

Parent: Represents the internalised voices and behaviours learned from authority figures during childhood.
Adult: Embodies rational thinking and decision-making based on current reality.
Child: Reflects the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors from one's early years.

Individuals switch between these ego states during interactions, and understanding these transitions can lead to more effective communication and healthier relationships. Berne also introduced the idea of "games," which are repetitive patterns of behavior that often have hidden motives and can lead to negative outcomes.

The ultimate goal of Transactional Analysis is to help individuals achieve autonomy by fostering self-awareness and promoting more constructive ways of interacting.

All things are possible. You don't need to feel one way or the other. Life is rarely black and white. Therapy can be really helpful in processing the grey areas of our life, thoughts and feelings.
