"And we wonder why they're anxious" (Have a read of the article). This reminded me of a conversation after class last night. A conversation that happens so many times after my classes, about how they have learned to fully relax since they've been coming to classes. Previously, they thought they were relaxing, but now realise that they weren't, basically, they can tune in to relax much deeper now. So, in our busy, sometimes hectic world, - We wonder why we/they are anxious! ☯️💕🙏
In the 1950s, every kindergartener knew the ritual: crayons down, lights low, and the soft hum of a record spinning through the air.
Naptime wasn’t a break — it was part of learning.
Teachers dimmed the lights, tiptoed between mats, and whispered, “Close your eyes.”
Kids rested, dreamed, or just stared at sunbeams dancing on the ceiling — learning something we’ve since forgotten: that rest is part of growth.
Then came the tests.
The “readiness.”
The race to get ahead.
By the 1980s, naps were gone. The mats rolled up. The lights stayed on.
Today, five-year-olds spend more time in structured lessons than third-graders did in the 1950s — no pauses, no quiet, no chance to just be.
And we wonder why they’re anxious.
Maybe it’s time we remembered what our teachers once knew:
You don’t grow by running all the time.
You grow in the stillness too.
Even big kids need naptime sometimes.

I first started to practice yoga to ‘clear my mind’ and was astounded as to how much better I felt after each class. My career was working in a nursery school and as I practiced yoga myself I was given the opportunity to train to teach yoga to children. When I returned to nursery and introduced yoga to the children I was amazed how well they engaged. The feedback from parents and the children was very positive.
I reduced my working hours in nursery and enhanced my yoga training. Baby Yoga and Children’s, Family and Community Yoga were my first independent courses. A period of time later, I further enhanced my training to include Special Yoga for children with special needs and disabilities (therapeutic yoga). I was really enjoying my new career and loved each class that I took and found that I was repeatedly being asked by the parents if I did any classes for adults. I hadn’t ever intended to teach yoga to adults, as my experiences were with children, but as time continued with so many more asking for adult classes that I decided to look into it further. This was a big decision for me! I tried a distance course (200 hours), with monthly sessions followed with assignments at home, but after 12 month’s this was not working out well with my schedule and felt that I had to leave.
The Om Yoga Show in Manchester was where I finally made my decision as to which training was the one for me. I researched many different courses before I came to my final decision which was to train at a retreat centre in Dublin with a Buddhist monk from Zenways, and I have not regretted this decision. Since this, I have continued to develop my practice adding to my Qigong training too.
Over my many years of practicing yoga I met many people who said that they had tried yoga once, they didn’t return as they weren’t flexible enough (or similar reasons). I wanted to encourage all people to have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of yoga so I have a focus on my classes having the beginner in mind. My classes encourage to practice with kindness, awareness, alignment and mindfulness. This flows from my Zen Yoga classes, but is also a part of all of my classes.
I offer a range of yoga sessions for all ages and abilities, in open classes (open to the public) and in closed groups e.g. Guiding groups, schools (teachers/students), holiday clubs, parent support groups, community social groups etc. I take yoga to the group in their own setting! I also work with people 1-1 in the home environment, for those who prefer the comfort of their own home to attending a class. I am now involved in a range of community classes at Rhyddings Park Coach House - please see above for more details.
