🚨 FISA 301 & First Aid Training – Are You Truly Prepared? 🌲🩹

Working in forestry and land-based environments brings real, unavoidable risks. That’s exactly why qualifications like FISA 301 exist — to ensure operators are competent, safe, and capable in demanding conditions.

But here’s the reality…

👉 Technical competence alone is not enough.

When something goes wrong in forestry, it often goes wrong seriously — and far from immediate help.

🌲 The Risk Profile in FISA 301 Activities

Tree climbing and aerial work introduce hazards such as:
• Falls from height
• Chainsaw injuries
• Crush injuries from timber
• Suspension trauma
• Severe / catastrophic bleeding

These aren’t minor incidents — they are life-threatening emergencies.

⏱️ The Critical Gap: Time to Help

Forestry work is often:
• Remote 🌄
• Poor signal 📵
• Difficult access for emergency services 🚑

That means you are the first responder.

What you do in the first few minutes can determine survival.

🩸 Where First Aid Training Becomes Critical

This is where Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry (EFAW +F) comes in.

It goes beyond standard workplace first aid and focuses on:

✅ Catastrophic bleed control (tourniquets, haemostatic dressings)
✅ Casualty management in remote environments
✅ Hypothermia prevention and treatment
✅ Incident planning and emergency response
✅ Realistic forestry-based scenarios

This aligns closely with the expectations of Forestry Industry Safety Accord guidance and supports safer working practices across the sector.

⚠️ Compliance vs Competence

Holding a FISA 301 ticket shows you can do the job.

But the real question is:

👉 Can you save a life if something goes wrong?

Employers, team leaders, and self-employed operators should be looking beyond minimum standards and asking:
• Do we have the right first aid provision on site?
• Are we trained for worst-case scenarios?
• Can we manage a catastrophic bleed before help arrives?

🎯 Train for Reality, Not Just Certification

At Sika First Aid Training, we deliver practical, scenario-based training built around real forestry incidents.

Our courses are designed for:

🌲 Tree surgeons & arborists
🦌 Deer managers & stalkers
🚜 Forestry & land-based workers

Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry Course – Thank You

At Sika First Aid Training, we recently had the privilege of delivering an Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry course, tailored specifically for those operating in remote and high-risk woodland environments.

This course brought together a great group of individuals working across forestry, deer management, and land-based roles — all with a shared commitment to improving safety, preparedness, and confidence when it matters most.

A Strong Group of Candidates

We’d like to extend a sincere thank you to every candidate who attended the course.

Your engagement, professionalism, and willingness to get fully involved in the practical elements made the training both effective and enjoyable. From catastrophic bleed management and trauma care through to CPR and casualty handling in remote settings, the standard throughout was excellent.

Forestry environments present unique challenges — distance from emergency services, difficult terrain, and the use of high-risk equipment — and it was clear that everyone on the course understood the importance of being prepared for worst-case scenarios.

Real-World, Practical Training

The EFAW + Forestry course is designed to go beyond standard first aid.

We focused on:
• Managing catastrophic bleeds (including tourniquet use)
• Dealing with crush injuries and trauma incidents
• CPR and AED use in remote environments
• Casualty assessment using structured approaches
• Incident management where evacuation may be delayed

The hands-on approach ensured candidates left with not just knowledge, but the confidence to act decisively in real situations.

Thanks to Joe Pettigrew – Ambershine Deer Management

A special thank you goes to Joe from Ambershine Deer Management for organising the course and providing an excellent venue.

Support from industry professionals like Joe is vital in raising safety standards across the sector. By investing in high-quality training, it helps ensure that those working in forestry and deer management are better equipped to deal with emergencies when they arise.

Supporting the Forestry Sector

At Sika First Aid Training, we are proud to support those working in rural and remote environments across the UK. Our Forestry First Aid (+F) courses are built around real-world scenarios, ensuring relevance to the environments our candidates operate in every day.

Looking Ahead

We look forward to continuing to work with professionals across the forestry and deer management sectors, delivering training that makes a genuine difference.

If you’re operating in remote areas and want to ensure you or your team are properly prepared, get in touch with Sika First Aid Training.

Building Safer Communities Through First Aid

Across Clackmannanshire, local communities rely on volunteers, coaches, childminders, and small businesses to keep things running safely. But when an emergency happens, the difference between panic and action often comes down to one thing — training.

First aid is not just for professionals. It is a life skill that empowers everyday people to step forward when it matters most.

Emergencies Happen Where You Least Expect

From Alloa to Dollar and the surrounding villages, incidents can occur anywhere:
• A player collapsing during a football match
• A child choking in a childcare setting
• A fall in a community hall or local event
• A cardiac arrest at work or in public

In many of these situations, you are the first person on scene.

Why Immediate Action Saves Lives

The first few minutes of an emergency are critical.
Early intervention can:
• Maintain airway and breathing
• Control catastrophic bleeding
• Start CPR before emergency services arrive
• Prevent conditions from worsening

Without training, people hesitate. With training, people act.

Local Training That Makes a Real Difference

Sika First Aid Training delivers courses across Clackmannanshire designed for real-life scenarios. This includes:
• Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
• Paediatric First Aid
• Community and group-based training

All courses are:
• Practical and hands-on
• Delivered at your venue
• Built around realistic situations

Be the Person Who Can Help

Communities are strongest when individuals are prepared. Whether you run a sports team, care for children, or support local groups — first aid training gives you the confidence to act.
