Swallowing Awareness Day 2025! 🍽️
A message from one of our SLTs…

“This year I spent the actual day with all my lovely SLT colleagues at our service line meeting at the head office in London.
But, I didn’t want to miss the occasion to raise awareness. To promote the work Cygnet having been doing with the Choking Awarenwss Campaign, I displayed resources across both my sites and created a treasure hunt quiz for staff. The aim of the activity was to informally train staff via them finding and reading the posters to find the answers to the quiz questions whilst having competitive fun! The person with the most correct question with will a prize to keep the motivation high!✨”

This week is Nutrition and Hydration Week💧

At Cygnet Sherwood Lodge, we ran a Nutrition and Hydration Group for patients exploring the importance of a balanced diet for supporting overall health and wellbeing. Cygnet Sherwood Lodge is a care setting for men with learning disabilities and mental health needs 🧠

Using accessible educational resources, we discussed key recommendations, the benefits of specific macronutrients, and the importance of keeping hydrated. We sampled many different foods from the main food groups and had discussions about which foods we enjoyed 🍽️

We discussed current fluid intake recommendations such as having 6-8 glasses of water per day, the signs and symptoms of dehydration, and the importance of fibre for supporting our digestive health. We looked at what foods contain fibre, and how these can benefit our health, promoting informed choices towards a healthier lifestyle 🏃🏼‍♂️‍➡️

It’s Swallowing Awareness Day today 🍽️
Our SLT at Bostall House created a visual display and set up a snack station with accessible information and resources, including mindful eating prompt cards, leaflets and fun facts about swallowing. It generated a really good discussion amongst staff and service users about the link to swallowing and quality of life, as well as spotlighting the role of SLT in supporting individuals with eating and drinking needs.
