Boundaries like this Lock, are there for a very good reason.
As a Gestalt Psychotherapist it has taken me many years to hold, safe, solid, healthy boundaries for myself first and then for others.
If like this lock, I left an opening for these boundaries to fall open, there would be a huge consequence.
The Canal would not only be effected here with to much water, so much it would effect the next lock and the next and the next.
Which would have a catastrophic outcome on not just the water in the lock, all the Canal Boats, all the people within these boats, the people walking past as the path may flood, spreading to the homes on the canal and of course all the animals habitat may be damaged , not just in this part of the Canal but all of it.
If we see the Water in the Canal as our Emotions and the Lock as our boundary, we all need clear, safe, solid, firm, healthy boundaries to support us with our emotional regulation, in healing and moving on in life. Within counselling there maybe, control, resistance, transference, projection, deflection, not taking accountability, blame, lack of trust and saftey.
The Therapist has to hold firm boundaries to support the client in regulating all of these modifications to contact.
They may be “ figural” within the Therapy Room ( within awareness) or out of awareness ( blocked) which affects the clients relationship with self, with the Therapist and other relationships.
If I as a Psychotherapist did not hold these boundaries safe, solid and firm, I would be giving my client a misservice.
