Not posted for a while so thought I’d try a few over the next few weeks.
I’m going to try and put my experience and knowledge into some simple posts for what I see a lot of.
First one, a tricky one.
Weight 😬
Being over weight can cause lots of issues.
Stress to your organs (not my speciality) and joints (I know a little about this 😂).
The knee is particularly affected by weight due to the mechanics of the joint. For very 1 pound of weight the force through the knees are increased to approximately 4 pounds, so for every 10 pound that’s approximately 40 pounds.
That’s a lot of extra stress for the knees causing more ware and tear of the cartilage. Making the knees more prone to arthritic changes and unfortunately pain.
So, what can you do…
Just losing a few pounds will reduce that force through the knees and help you move with hopefully less stress on the knees and less pain.
Exercises like walking, swimming and cycling are all non or low impact movements so shouldn’t cause any further problems but will help strengthen the muscles around the knee.
See photos for more strengthening exercises you can do at home from Arthritis UK.
Stay tuned for Posture next.
