'Shoulds' show up in most of us, and we dont always notice the weight that comes along with them.

Not everything we carry is visible.

From the outside, it can seem like we are fine, even thriving at times. We hold it all together, we smile, show up and just get on with things. Yet beneath the surface, we may be carrying far more than others can see.

But, just because they can't be seen, doesn’t mean they are any less heavy, or that they don’t still impact and eventually take their toll on us.

For many, therapy can become a place, sometimes the only place, where some of that weight can be put down, acknowledged and unpacked.

Just because you are carrying it, doesnt mean it has to be carried alone. And just because you are carrying it now, doesnt mean you have to forever.

Healing isn't always straightforward. It can feel messy, hard and uncomfortable, at times.

We might set a boundary and struggle to uphold it as the guilt sets in.
We circle back to something we thought we had 'dealt with'.
We return to old patterns we know don't truly serve us.

And that's ok. You're not 'doing' it wrong.

Healing isn’t about becoming perfectly regulated or never struggling again. It’s often about noticing sooner and about having more awareness when we do 🩷

For my birthday this year, a good friend gifted me a new set of therapy cards. I’m always struck by how powerful these cards can be in helping clients uncover thoughts and emotions they didn’t realise were there. Sometimes we use them in a first session, especially when a client isn’t sure where to begin. Other times, a client asks for them simply out of curiosity.

I almost always bring them into our final session together. They offer a wonderful way to visualise the counselling journey — from those early moments of uncertainty, through growing self-awareness, to recognising how experiences have shaped them, and finally to the changes they are beginning to embody.

I am looking forward to exploring this new set with my clients.

Safety in therapy doesn’t mean it will always feel calm or 'easy', or that difficult things wont be brought to the surface.
It means that when hard emotions do arise, the relationship remains consistent and steady enough for healing to happen.

Therapy isn’t about rescuing.
But it also isn’t about leaving someone to struggle alone.

From my own experience of counselling, I know firsthand how deeply healing self‑awareness can be. It offers a compassionate space to explore how past experiences may still be shaping your present, often in ways you might not be aware of. Through the counselling process, we can gently uncover the patterns, beliefs and emotional responses that have developed over time, allowing you to understand yourself more fully. This growing awareness can support healthier relationships, better emotion regulation and the ability to make choices that are aligned with who you truly are 🫶
