Tiny Tums Nutrition Hi, I’m Annina, the tiny tums dietitian! My mission is simple: to support parents in nourishing their little ones, no mater their stage or struggles.

As a specialist paediatric dietitian and mummy to a little foodie, I can empathise with the challenges parents face when navigating their child’s nutrition.

Our Newest Tiny Tum Has Arrived! 💙

It’s been a little quieter here while we’ve been settling into life as a family of four. We’re all completely besotted….especially his big brother! 🥹

It’s been a big reminder that no two newborn feeding journeys are the same. Even as a dietitian, I’ve had to call in some fabulous lactation consultants to help with latch struggles (and two very sore ni***es 🫣).

Turns out, I can’t be mummy and dietitian at the same time. Getting the right support makes all the difference in those hazy newborn days. 💛

I’ll be back soon with more supportive content once we’ve found our rhythm (and maybe some sleep!)

⛔️Can we stop calling fussy eating a behavioural issue?

This kind of language implies there’s something wrong with your child. That’s not only inaccurate, it’s unfair to parents and children.

📊 Research shows that in children under 3, fussy eating is often related to:
• Oral motor delay
• Gastrointestinal symptoms like reflux
• Food allergy

Can we agree to call it what it is? Feeding difficulties.

When we frame it as “bad behaviour,” we are placing guilt and most parents already carry enough of that already.
Feeding challenges need support, not shame.

7 Things I Wish More People Knew About Breastfeeding
In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 💛

1️⃣Breastfeeding is not meant to hurt… if it does, get help!
Pain can signal that something isn’t quite right, like latch or positioning. Or, it might be a symptom of infections such as thrush or mastitis. Don’t suffer in silence; early support from a lactation consultant can make all the difference.

2️⃣You do not need a freezer stash of expressed breastmilk to meet your baby’s needs!
If your baby is gaining weight well, there’s no need to build up a stash unless you’re returning to work or have to be away from your baby. Take the pressure off - feeding on demand is tough enough.

3️⃣Breastfeeding can be for comfort, not just hunger.
It soothes, regulates, and strengthens connection. Let’s stop telling mums they’re “making a rod for their own back.” Comfort is a valid and essential need for both mum and baby.

4️⃣Watch your baby’s cues, not the clock!
Newborns feed frequently—fact! Responsive feeding helps build milk supply and supports your baby’s needs far better than the lie that is the 3-hourly rule. Cluster feeding is hard, but normal!

5️⃣Using ni**le shields is NOT a failure!
They’re a helpful tool, especially for preterm or low birthweight babies. Adapting your journey to meet your baby’s needs doesn’t take away from the amazing job you’re doing!

6️⃣The amount of milk you can pump does NOT reflect what your baby receives!
Babies are much more efficient than any pump. Low output from pumping does not necessarily mean low supply; don’t get hung up on the 5-10ml
pumping sessions.

7️⃣Infant feeding support isn’t always easy to access—so look for an antenatal feeding course before baby arrives.
A little preparation can go a long way when you’re thrown in the early days of constant cluster feeds!

P.S. I wish I looked like this every time I breastfed…but it was 90% mum buns and big eye bags. 💛

Here’s what I’d tell you if I wasn’t worried about hurting your feelings:

⭐️ However you choose to feed your baby, their most rapid growth happens in infancy. What you do during this time lays the foundation for their long-term health.

⭐️ Protein requirements are easy to meet, even with fussy eaters. Iron intake is a different story. It’s the most common nutrient deficiency in infants and is vital for brain development, especially in those early years.

⭐️ There’s no magic wand (sorry), but with the right support and strategies, you can improve diet variety in children with challenging feeding behaviours.

⭐️ Feeding your baby brings all the opinions. But here’s the truth, not everyone giving advice is an expert. Block out the noise and find someone with qualifications and experience in infant and child nutrition.
