Urban Balance Yoga

Urban Balance Yoga Hatha yoga teacher I struggled through my first couple classes with my anxiety, but soon found that I was able to relax more quickly each time I got on the mat.

I started practising yoga in my mid-twenties and soon found myself wanting to go just for the feeling I would get at the end – the thought of 10 minutes of peace and relaxation in savasana, and leaving the class in a feel-good bubble - would get me there even on the days when I really didn’t feel up to it! I dipped in and out of classes over the next few years, and it wasn’t until I moved to New Zealand that I started to build a more regular practice and love for yoga. I have suffered with anxiety and panic attacks through most of my adult life, and during a particularly difficult time with this when I was first living in Auckland, I remembered that yoga classes would often help bring me a bit of calm when I was extremely anxious. From then on I made yoga a more frequent part of my life. Because for me, yoga brings me out of my head and into my body (something I desperately need!), and it encourages me to tune in to myself and listen to what my body is telling me. By focusing on my body, movement, and my breath I am able to connect in with my body and let go of a busy mind – at least while I’m on the mat!

Join us on Tuesdays. Chasing Joy @ 10am

Classes now available as drop in, though you’re of course still welcome to book in advance

If you’ve got preschoolers you are also welcome to bring with you - this week with school closures we had a couple of primary kids doing art alongside us (and making certificates!) and it was such a lovely addition!

These classes are often filled with noise and chat and interruptions. That’s what we’re here for. We’ll find pockets of calm for you too, but we’re here for it all ❤️

✨ The Stories We Tell Ourselves

Our identities are often built from stories — some we’ve written, and others we’ve inherited.

In this 60-minute taster journal circle, we’ll gently explore the roles, labels, and narratives that shape who we believe we are… and begin to uncover what’s underneath.

Expect quiet reflection, guided journaling prompts, and an invitation to share in a safe space.

📅 When: Sunday 30th 7-8pm📍 Where: The Log Cabin💫 Cost: Free — just come as you are

A gorgeous, intimate journal circle tonight at the log cabin. We journaled and talked about the way we introduce ourselves, what we share with others, but also about creativity and our rediscovery of this as adults.

Thank you so much for joining me, and I’m excited for the next!!

What Wednesday nights are all about. Not getting into the pose, but getting into the body.

That’s what I am passionate about sharing. No gymnastics, no competition (with self or others) but only - how can you use your practice to get into your body?

The pose isn’t something to achieve—it’s something to feel.
Let it take you inward.

I have been an intermittent diary writer through my life - it was my refuge in my teens, and then through various phases in my adulthood where life was tough and I needed a space to vent.

Then almost 4 years ago, I stumbled upon a women’s journal circle. And I was hooked. Journalling, and attending circles, has been a more or less consistent practice for me since, not only through the bad times but also in the good.

Not only was it about providing myself space to breathe, to process, to get stuff out of my head and onto paper, but it was about community. I’ve had some of the most wonderfully honest, unfiltered conversations with other women who, like me - were ready to show up fully, without the gloss. When the first woman stands up and says - this is me, this is what’s going on for me, and this is how I really feel - then others step on board. There’s safety in vulnerability, and then there’s connection.

One of my good friends in the UK, and a woman I’ve had countless long phone chats with over the last couple of years is a woman I have only otherwise spent time with online in journal circles. Because we shared, and we trusted, and we built a connection.

Now, journaling (and I’ve discovered it’s not just writing - it might be painting, collage, messing around with colour on a page) is a non negotiable part of everyday life for me. It’s had such a huge impact on me, and on the women I have met through it.

And so, moving back to NZ and starting anew, I wanted to create a space where other women can experience what I have too — somewhere cozy, real, and welcoming.

If you’ve been curious, this Sunday’s circle is the perfect time to come try it out. You don’t need to prepare anything — just bring your notebook and willingness to experience something new. 💛

Our Story

I've been practising yoga for more than a decade now, after discovering it in my mid twenties, and it has been a part of my life ever since. It has been the best treatment for the anxiety and panic attacks I've suffered with on and off for years. People talk about (and tend to focus on!) the physical benefits of yoga but in fact, for me, the mental ones are much greater. I've tried many types of yoga and have enjoyed the challenges of each but I find hatha is the perfect combination - the connection of the breath to the body and the benefits for mental and physical heath - yoga is not just about headstands!

Training:

Ashram Yoga Level 1 (200hr) Yoga Teacher Training (Auckland, New Zealand; April -October 2016)

Yoga Medicine Essentials - Spine, Hip & Myofascial Release (Gisborne, New Zealand; August 2019)
