🍝 Reconnect Through Cookery 🍝
What a fantastic session today! Our members cooked up a delicious lasagne made with 5% lean minced beef, served with fresh salad and sides. πŸ₯—
Our wonderful members worked hard preparing the salad, chopping lettuce, tomatoes, onions, spring onions, cucumber and peppers. We also enjoyed peas and garlic bread with our meal. Everything tasted amazing! πŸ˜‹
A big thank you to Natalie for being our brilliant quiz master 🧠 and Sian for calling the bingo numbers 🎱 – lots of laughs and fun as always!
Huge thanks to all our volunteers for their hard work in the kitchen πŸ‘
Thank you to Anthony for sweeping the hall 🧹 and Peter the caretaker for setting up the tables for us.
The atmosphere was lovely, the food was delicious, and most importantly our members absolutely love this group and the positive impact it has on them. Sessions like this bring people together, build friendships, and help everyone learn new skills while having fun. ❀️
We’ll see you all Wednesday for our Reconnect Through Music session 🎢
Have a great weekend everyone! 😊

😊 Two Great Days at National Council
Amy and Christy from Caerphilly People First attended the **All Wales People First National Council meeting on 10th and 11th March at Galeri Caernarfon.
πŸš† We travelled by train from Cardiff with other staff and members from All Wales People First, and the journey was smooth.
πŸ—“οΈ Day 1
We started by going through the minutes from the last meeting.
We checked the actions that had been completed and asked questions if anything was unclear.
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’Ό Joe Powell, Chief Executive of All Wales People First, gave us an update about the important work they are doing across Wales.
πŸ—£οΈ Speaking up for Caerphilly
Amy spoke on behalf of our members.
She shared concerns about:
πŸ’» GP appointments moving online
πŸ“± The new e-consultation system for booking appointments.
Amy explained that some people with learning disabilities may find online systems difficult to use.
πŸ‘ We are very proud of Amy for speaking up and sharing our members’ views.
πŸ’¬ National Council Review
All the representatives had a chance to talk about:
βœ… What is working well
⚠️ What could be improved
There were really good discussions and lots of positive ideas shared.
πŸ—“οΈ Day 2
We were joined on Zoom by the Senedd Engagement Team who gave a presentation about voting.
πŸ—³οΈ Voting is important because:
β€’ Your voice matters
β€’ You can help choose who makes decisions
β€’ It helps create change in your community
πŸ“… Remember: Elections are in May.
🏑 Homes Not Hospitals
Joe also shared an update about the Homes Not Hospitals campaign.
This campaign is about making sure people with learning disabilities can live in their homes and communities with the right support, instead of staying in hospital for long periods.
Everyone agreed this is really important work.
πŸ“± Sharing Social Media Ideas
We also had some group discussions and shared ideas for good social media posts.
It was great to see everyone:
😊 Taking part
πŸ’‘ Sharing ideas
πŸ—£οΈ Talking about their lived experiences
πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ A Lovely Walk Around Caernarfon
We also enjoyed a lovely morning walk around Caernarfon. It is a beautiful place with lots of history.
We saw the famous Caernarfon Castle, a huge medieval castle built over 700 years ago by King Edward I. The castle is a very important part of Welsh history and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 🏰
It was great to see such an amazing place while we were there.
πŸ’™ A Lovely Two Days
It was also really nice to:
🀝 Catch up with other People First members
πŸ‘‹ Spend time with the All Wales People First team
Thank you to everyone for a **friendly, positive and productive National Council meeting

🌟 Annual Health Check Hackathon – What a Fantastic Day! 🌟

Today Caerphilly People First members and volunteers attended the Annual Health Check Hackathon organised by Cwm Taff People First. We met with other People First groups, organisations and day services. It was lovely to see everyone working together. 🀝
πŸ’‘ What is a Hackathon?
A hackathon is when people come together to share ideas and be creative about a topic. Everyone works in groups to create things like poems, songs, videos or drama.
Our group wrote a poem about Annual Health Checks. ✍️
⭐ Gethin did a fantastic job helping to read the poem to everyone. Well done Gethin! πŸ‘
Other groups wrote songs and performed them. 🎢
The songs were fantastic and helped raise awareness about why health checks are so important.
🎭 One group performed a drama showing:
βœ”οΈ What a good Annual Health Check appointment looks like
❌ What a bad appointment can look like
It was a brilliant demonstration and helped everyone understand how doctors and nurses should support people with learning disabilities. πŸ‘
🎬 We also watched the video we helped make with the Learning Disability Nurses about Annual Health Checks. It was great to see it being shared.
πŸ₯ What is an Annual Health Check?
An Annual Health Check is a free check-up at the doctor for people with learning disabilities.
It helps people stay healthy and talk about any worries.
Our poem explained what people need at their appointment, such as:
β€’ Clear information
β€’ Time to talk
β€’ Support if needed
β€’ Being listened to ❀️
🍽️ Lunch was lovely too! Paula really enjoyed her gluten free platter.
πŸ’¬ A big thank you to the tutors, who are very talented, creative and lovely to work with.
πŸ‘ A massive thank you to Dawn and her team for organising such a brilliant event. Days like this are so important to raise awareness about Annual Health Checks. Some people in attendance said they still haven’t had a health check, and some had never even heard about them before. That shows why events like this really matter.
πŸ‘ Thank you to everyone involved for such a brilliant and inspiring day.

🎢 Reconnect Through Music – Today’s Session β˜€οΈ

We had a fantastic time at this morning’s Reconnect Through Music session! Our members were in great voice and together sang an amazing 25 songs, matching the beautiful sunshine outside. 🌞🎀 We heard favourites both old and new, and every performance was wonderful. Here are just a few of today’s highlights:

🎡 Sean sang Going Underground by The Jam
🎡 Ellysia performed Can’t Get You Out of My Head by Kylie
🎡 Theresa gave us a lovely version of Eternal Flame by The Bangles
🎡 Anthony sang Against All Odds by Phil Collins
🎡 Christine performed Material Girl by Madonna
🎡 Morgan and Mandy performed a brilliant duet of Seasons in the Sun by Westlife

We truly loved every single performance – thank you to everyone who sang and supported each other. πŸ’™ A big thank you as well to Christy, Cheryl, Helen and Zoe for preparing our delicious pizza lunch πŸ• and to Pete for setting up the hall ready for the session. It was also wonderful to welcome two new members to their first session β€” a big welcome to Robbie and Joe! πŸ‘‹ We hope you enjoyed your first Reconnect Through Music experience.

πŸ’¬ Some lovely feedback from today:

Chris said he enjoyed interacting with people
Judith enjoyed meeting new people
Olivia enjoyed the lovely atmosphere

Thank you to everyone who came along and made the session so special. We’re already looking forward to the next one! 🎢✨
